French Poem Recording “Les Colchiques” de Guillaume Apollinaire

Author: Camille Chevalier-Karfis

Slower and natural readings of the French poem “Les Colchiques” de Guillaume Appollinaire – listen to me clear French audio recording and read the English translation of the poem.

2 – English Translation – “The Crocuses” by Guillaume Appollinaire

Here is my own translation of the French poem. I went for a literal translation so you could understand the vocabulary.

the crocuses

The meadow is poisonous but beautiful fall
The cows grazing there
Are slowly poisoned
The crocus circle under the eye and lilac colored
Blooms there your eyes are like this flower
Purplish like their dark circle and like this autumn
And my life for your eyes is slowly poisoned

The school children come crashing
Dressed in smocks and playing harmonica
They pick the crocuses which are like mothers
Daughters of their daughters and are the color of your eyelids
Which beat as the flowers beat in the crazy wind

The guardian of the herd sings softly
While slow and mooing the cows abandon
Forever this large meadow and its evil autumn flowers
