On était en hiver, et Olivier et mois étions “montés” à Paris pour quelques jours. Ce matin-là, lorsque nous nous sommes réveillés, bonne surprise ! Il faisait beau ! Bon, pas super chaud, mais vraiment doux.

It was winter time. Olivier and I had gone “up” to Paris (that’s an expression used by people in the countryside, to insist on the… well, the “importance” of the trip to the Capital…) for a few days. That morning, when we woke up, good surprise! The sun was up. OK, the temperature was not super hot, but it was really mild out.

Que ce soit chez nous à Paimpol ou à Paris, ou dans n’importe quel endroit où nous allons d’ailleurs, Olivier et moi avons une règle d’or. Quand il y a du soleil en hiver, on en profite et on sort dehors.

Whether we are in Paimpol or Paris, or in any other place we may go actually, Olivier and I have a golden rule. When it’s sunny in winter, we seize the opportunity and we go out.

Out in Paris in Winter

Où aller ? Paris est tellement belle… ou beau ? Paris est-elle belle ou Paris est-il beau ? C’est une bonne question ! Pour moi, Paris est belle, ça ne fait aucun doute :-) Et à Paris, j’adore me promener le long de la Seine, aller saluer le Louvre, la Pyramide, flâner dans les Tuileries, puis faire un clin d’oeil à l’Obélisque.

Where to go? Paris is so beautiful. Is Paris feminine or masculine? Paris est belle or Paris est beau ? (follow the link to my article about that). As far as I’m concerned, Paris est belle, no doubt about it :-) And in Paris, I love to walk alongside the Seine, go say hi to the Louvre, the Pyramid, stroll the Tuileries, and wink at the Obelisk.

Après nous être promenés pendant deux bonnes heures, c’est là où nous nous trouvions, assis sur les emblématiques chaises vertes, en train de reposer nos jambes fatiguées en regardant les voitures tourner autour de l’Obélisque. Quand tout d’un coup…

After walking for about two hours, that’s where we were, sitting on one of the typical green chairs, resting our tired legs as we were watching the cars going around the Obelisk. When suddenly…

Il a commencé à pleuvoir. D’abord quelques grosses gouttes… Ce n’est pas ça qui me fait peur : je ne suis pas en sucre et je ne vais pas fondre… Mes cheveux vont friser : c’est une bonne blague, ils le sont déjà ! Mais le ciel ne laisse rien présager de bon : c’est tout gris maintenant, et la pluie redouble.

It started to rain. First a few large drops… That’s not going to scare me away: I’m not made of sugar and I’m not going to melt (French saying)… My hair is going to get frizzy: what a good joke, it already is! However the sky looks ominous (lit: doesn’t let you foresee anything good): it’s overcast now, and it’s raining hard (lit: the rain doubles up).

On voit un gros bâtiment… C’est quoi ? L’Orangerie ? Ah bon? C’est là ? “Si, si Olivier, c’est un musée connu, je t’assure. Je crois qu’il y a des tableaux de Monet… Allez, on y va, ça ferait plaisir à mon Papa…”

We see a big building… What is it? L’Orangerie? Really? It’s here? “Yes, absolutely Olivier, it’s a very famous museum, I promise you. I think there are some of Monet’s paintings in it. Come on, let’s go, my Dad would be pleased…”

Visiting L’Orangerie in Winter in Paris

Winter à Paris = pas de touristes. Pas de queue pour entrer. Le temps de prendre une photo (eh oui… qui pourrait resister…) nous voilà dans l’Orangerie.

Winter in Paris = no tourists. No line to get in. Just the time to take a picture (yep… who could resist) we are inside de Orangerie.

En “bonne” parisienne, je n’y étais jamais allée. Comment ça ? Et bien oui, les Parisiens connaissent souvent bien moins Paris que les touristes. Ça vous étonne ? Pourtant je suis presque sûre que chez vous, c’est la même chose…

As a “true” (lit. good, meaning real/true here) Parisian, I had never been there. “What?” you say. Well yes, Parisians often know Paris much less than the tourists. You are surprised? Yet I’m almost sure it’s the same thing where you live…

Monet’s Waterlilies In l’Orangerie

Bref, nous “tombons” sur les Nymphéas. Ou plutôt nous plongeons dedans. Plouf. Nous disparaissons tous les deux pendant trente minutes. Impossible de partir de cette salle magique, faite spécialement selon les indications de Monet pour accueillir ses tableaux.

So, we stumble upon the Waterlilies. Or rather, we dive into them. Splash. We both disappear for thirty minutes. Impossible to leave that magical space, especially built according to Monet’s indications to house his paintings.

Alors, les Nymphéas, je connaissais évidemment. Bien même, puisque je vais souvent à Giverny (suivez le lien pour un article bilingue et le vocabulaire des impressionnistes). Donc je connais le jardin, l’étang… Mais je ne les avais jamais vus tous ensemble “grandeur nature”. Un vrai choc. Ça n’a rien à voir avec les reproductions, ni même l’expérience qu’on peut en avoir en vidéo. Il faut les voir en vrai pour comprendre.

So, the Waterlilies, of course I knew them. Pretty well actually, since I often go to Giverny (follow the link to a bilingual article and the French Impressionist Vocabulary). So I know the garden, the pond… But I had never seen them all together, life-size. A real jolt. It is absolutely nothing like the copies, nor even the feeling you can get with a video. You have to see them for real to understand.

On n’était pas au bout de nos surprises. Au sous-sol, le musée est immense. Ça n’en finit pas. Et en janvier, nous étions tout seuls : une visite privée presque.

And it was not the end of our surprises. In the basement, the museum is huge. It never ends. And in January, we were all by ourselves: a private tour almost.

Si vous voulez plus d’infos sur l’Orangerie, je vous conseille d’aller sur leur site, hein : ça sera plus simple et beaucoup plus clair et précis que si j’essayais de vous raconter ce dont je me souviens ! Mais ce que je peux vous dire, c’est que ça vaut vraiment la peine.

Should you like more info about l’Orangerie, I suggest you go to their website: it will be easier and much clearer and more precise than if I try to tell you what I remember! But I can tell you that it’s really worth it.
