Hi, my name is David and I am a former French Skype student of both Camille and Olivier’s. I live in Melbourne, Australia, and I have been studying French for quite a few years.

I try to get as much practice with the French language as possible while still living in Australia and I have found that one good way to this this is to go to see as many French movies as possible.

Even though Australia is very far from most of the rest of the world, we are certainly not lacking in a large diversity of cultural activities. For the last 30 years the Alliance Française in Australia has been organizing an annual French Film festival, which has grown in size and popularity so that it now presents more than 50 films each year throughout Australia to more than 185,000 attendees during the month of March.

The largest number of films that I have seen during a Festival is 15, but I only saw 11 this year. Knowing that both Camille, and particularly Olivier, are keen cinephiles, I thought it would be interesting for them to read a brief summary of each of the French films that I saw this year.

Plus, of course, given that I should write it in French, it would be good practice for me! So here are my short comments on 11 of the French films which were recently screened here in Australia during the 30th French Film Festival in 2019.

best french movies

I really liked this film, mainly because I like the two main actors and the music is beautiful. However, the plot of the film is very predictable and we can see the end coming from a mile away.

It’s a crazy comedy. There are some good action scenes, some very funny moments, but the plot is too ridiculous.

It’s a good movie, Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the role of a Jewish mother who has high expectations for her son and he spends most of his life trying to live up to them, and finally succeeds.

This is a typical film about a dysfunctional family which is finally reunited by the death of the grandfather and the need to care for the grandmother. Not very interesting, in my opinion.

I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would. The plot is very predictable and it’s very much a “feel good” movie, very comforting, which contains some very funny moments and also some dramatic moments.

A weird story about a widow who wakes up one morning and decides to have a garage sale and sell all her belongings because she thinks she’s going to die that night. The plot reveals, very slowly, the details about her troubled relationship with her daughter and the end is very “explosive”.

The film progresses very slowly, but Lois (my wife) and I loved it because almost all the film takes place in a grandiose old-fashioned home that contains beautiful antique furniture, which Lois and I found very interesting, actually more interesting than the movie itself!

It’s not a movie for everyone. It’s about the processes and social workers who are involved in adopting a baby. Lois and I liked it, it’s very well done and it’s interesting to understand the complexity of the process.

It’s a very modern story which talks about someone who impersonate someone else on the internet and the results. Juliette Binoche is wonderful in the main role, she is on screen about 90% of the film and she really carries the movie.

9 – 2019 French Movie “Un homme PressĂ©â€

Fabrice Luchini

This is a very simple story about a man married to his work who never has enough time for his family and so he finds himself distanced from his wife and daughter. One day he has a stroke and during his convalescence he finally realizes that life is more than just about work. As a result, he becomes a better and kinder person and eventually he is reconciled with his daughter.

I went to see this film because I like Fabrice Luchini, and also because he speaks French very well and very clearly, but during most of this film, because of his stroke, he speaks very oddly and that’s a shame!

This is a film about the victims of a Catholic priest who sexually molested them when they were children, and their attempts to bring him to justice. The film has nothing in common with Ozon’s other films and it’s more like a dramatized documentary, so for that reason it’s a little disappointing. It’s very well played, but it lacks the twists and turns that are typical of Ozon movies.

I learned a lot about the French Revolution! Unfortunately, this film doesn’t seem to be able to decide if it wants to deal with the love story between the two central characters, or the revolution itself. The combination of the two themes doesn’t work for me.
