The French Pronoun Y Replaces A PLACE.
A place is introduced by a preposition of place which can be βΓ β but also βsur, sous, en, au, auxβ¦β:
- Je vais Γ Paris = jβy vais
Iβm going to Paris = Iβm going there - Je vais en France = jβy vais
Iβm going to France = Iβm going there - Je vais au Japon = jβy vais
Iβm going to Japan = Iβm going there
When you study this, the key is to know well the rules on prepositions of places in French.
The French Pronoun Y Also Replaces A THING
The French Pronoun Y also Replaces a thing (never a person) introduced by βΓ , au, aux, Γ lβ, Γ laβ
- Je pense Γ mon travail = jβy pense
(y replacing βΓ mon travailβ)
Iβm thinking about my work = Iβm thinking about it - Je rΓ©flΓ©chis aux problΓ¨mes internationaux β jβy rΓ©flΓ©chis
(y replacing βaux problΓ¨mes internationaux)
Iβm pondering the international problems = Iβm pondering them
The βΓ , au, aux, Γ la Γ l'β often comes from the verb meaning that this particular verb is going to be followed by βΓ β, and that is why youβd be using a βΓ β there.
This is the case for my examples βpenser Γ β and βrΓ©flΓ©chir Γ β.
So, in order to master Y, you should really learn the most common verbs followed by Γ in French. And train on making sentences using Y with these verbs.
Note than when a verb is followed by Γ + PERSON, you need to use an indirect object pronoun (me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur):
- Je parle Γ Pierre = je lui parle
Iβm talking to Pierre = Iβm talking to him
(the verb is parler Γ quelquβun)
Or a stress pronoun: βmoi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, ellesβ
- Je pense Γ lui
I think of him
(the verb is penser Γ quelquβun)
You cannot guess, you have to know which verbβs construction asks for which pronoun β indirect object or stressβ¦ another difficulty of Frenchβ¦
