Thursday, August 13th 2015 – Today is the day before the beginning of the sailorâ song festival in Paimpol – itâs a festival which takes place every two years, lasts three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and welcomes about 165,000 visitors. Paimpolâs harbour is full of pretty boats – they arrived this afternoon.
The harbor is closed for traffic, and becomes pedestrian-only for these three days, and there are many arts-and-crafts and all sorts of stands around the harbour – there are animations for kids, games for all and all sorts of activities.
Finally, the sailorsâ songs festival is mostly that: sailorsâ songs! And international guests, more or less famous who sing in concerts (some on the harbour in the street, by their boat, others on concert stages that have been set up for the occasion). This year features – among others – Youssou NâDour and Souad Massi who I like very much.

Itâs my father-in-law, Didier, who takes care of the food for all the volunteers and the boat crews / musicians etc⊠This represents more or less 5000 meals in three days, and its a lot of work. Olivier and I volunteer, and we help him to serve the meals. Often, the musicians play music or sing during the meals – itâs really cool.
Today, there was already a great ambiance – everybody was singing, at the end, people climbed on the tables, some were dancing – it was a real party. We started our shift serving at 6:30PM, and finished at 11:30 PM. Itâs really exhausting.
Vendredi 14 AoĂ»t – DĂ©but officiel du festival
Unfortunately, this morning it was raining cats and dogs⊠Itâs not good for the festival because a lot of people are not going to come because of the weather. Well, there is still as many musicians, so for us in the kitchen, as much work!
Didier is a chef, and he takes care of preparing the food for all the musicians of the festival. This represents about 5.600 meals to serve, in seven sittings in total.
People arrive, they see the menu, for example:
- Buffet de CruditeÌs & Charcuteries
Assortment of raw vegetables, salads & cold cuts - RoÌti de boeuf sauce BeÌarnaise, poeÌleÌe de leÌgumes, gratin de choux fleur
Beef roast BeÌarnaise Sauce, vegetable stir- fry, cauliflower gratin
or Scabbard fish filet in seafood cream sauce, steamed potatoes
– ou Raie au CaÌpres, julienne de leÌgumes
or Skate in capers sauce, vegetable medley - Salade & Fromage Dessert au choix: âą Fruit âą Patisserie âą Riz au Lait
Salad & Cheese Choice of desert: âą Fruit âą Pastry âą Rice Pudding
Then they take a tray, help themselves of bread, butter, a plate of cheese + desert, then a main course (the cooks prepare the plates as they are being asked), then go to the self for raw vegetables and salads. As you can notice, this order does not follow the logical order of a French meal, but it’s been studied to avoid waste.
Cristine, Olivier and myself took care of preparing the cheese / desert plates. It’s not very complicated, but you need to be well-organised. And it’s long lasting and tiring. But it’s also quite cool because there is a good ambiance in the hall: often, musicians sing for us.
Olivier is cutting some “far breton” .
Many people tell me I look a bit like the girl on the festival’s poster this year! Probably the hair…
Today, the weather was nice – and the public was there! There are many people of the harbour for the festival – orchestras and bands parade and sing on the harbour, tourists visit the large boats, go to listen to concerts, we all take pictures and everybody is happy!
Of course, I take advantage of the situation to take funny pictures – I never miss an opportunity to laugh!
A strange animal roams the streets of Paimpol during the festival… Is it a one hump camel? No, it has 2 humps, so, it’s a 2 hump camel !! He/she is charming, and has a great sense of rhythm. I love it, I would like to adopt it, but I’m afraid I won’t have the room in my home…
It’s Sunday morning and the sky is grey, menacing… I hope it’s not going to rain, it would be too bad for the last day! Here is a typical video of what you could see in the street if you were here with me.
Finally, the last evening, Didier was offering a seafood platter.
Olivier and other volunteers opened 600 oysters… yak!
By the end of the evening, there was absolutely nothing left. The portions had been perfectly calculated, no waste whatsoever – bravo to the chef and his team of professional cooks!
Et voila… A dans deux ans !
That’s it… See you in two years!
