Squash are quite popular in France nowadays. First, we’ll study the French squash names and then I’ll take you for a live French practice in a hubbard squash field in Paimpol, Brittany, France.

Before I take you to Brittany with me, let me tell you how you can benefit from my videos.

Why An Unscripted French Video Practice?

Students of French usually only hear extremely controlled French: overly enunciated French, people reading scripts from teleprompters…

In real life conversation, on top of speaking using modern French pronunciation, we hesitate, start a sentence but change direction mid-way, and our sentences are not always logically structured.

In the video below, notice all the hesitation or the French filler words I use: “eh bien”, “et donc”, “voilà”. Notice how my sentences seem to never end as new ideas flow into each other…

In my live videos, I don’t plan ahead. I don’t learn a script. I speak spontaneously, just as I would in real life. I just try to use rather simple constructions and tenses, and I explain words I think you may not know.

Just as with my French audiobooks, recorded at several levels of enunciations – overly enunciated and modern spoken French – students tell me this natural, yet reachable French practice videos are truly helping them understand real life French. Let me know how it works for you!

How To Study French With This Video?

Listen the the video a couple of times without reading the transcript. Repeat sentences you cannot understand 3, 4, 5 times. Can you guess what I’m saying at all? Look at the French transcript: do you understand now? How come you didn’t get it (pronunciation, vocabulary?). If you still don’t understand, look at the English translation and make French flashcards with the new vocabulary.

You may also read the French transcript out-loud as the video is playing, and try to mimick my voice and intonation. Pay close attention to the word-grouping and study where I breathe and pause.

Vous voyez c’est une petite boule donc orange : on peut faire des soupes avec, on peut faire des purées… c’est très très bon… on peut faire toutes sortes de choses avec les potimarrons !

I am sometimes asked this: people tell me “oh I’m going to France and it’s wonderful! I see cauliflower on the side of the road here, or strawberries… am I allowed to take them? ” No ! No no no ! You don’t have the right to take them! OK… if you pass by a field with cows you are not allowed to take a cow! So it’s the same here!

Et donc c’est ce qui se passe à Paimpol : à Paimpol à marée basse et bien je ne peux pas me baigner, voilà !

So this morning, I went to a different beach called Launay beach: it’s a beach where… it’s a beach where there is water all the time! It might seem weird to say but in Brittany… if you follow my videos, if you know French Today well, if you know my newsletter – if you haven’t subscribed to the newsletter go ahead, subscribe – I’ll put a link in the description but it’s easy frenchToday.com/newsletter something like that – and so if you know French Today you know that in Brittany the problem is that there is a very very strong difference between high tide and low tide: at high tide there is water, the sea is at the edge of the beach and at low tide the sea is very very very far and sometimes it is not … it is not possible to swim. And so that’s what happens in Paimpol: in Paimpol at low tide and well I can’t swim, that’s it!

Donc là je suis allée à la plage de Launay et j’ai trouvé de l’eau, beaucoup d’eau et donc je suis allée nager avec mon masque, mon masque et mon tuba – pas mon tuba tut tut tut !Pas mon tuba pour jouer de la musique ! Mon tuba pour respirer sous l’eau ! Donc un masque et un tuba et mes palmes pour pouvoir nager vite sous l’eau et il n’y a pas énormément de choses à voir à Launay mais je suis très très très contente parce que j’ai vu quelque chose d’incroyable – vous n’allez pas me croire – j’ai vu un hippocampe !

So there I went to Launay beach and found water, lots of water and so I went swimming with my mask, my mask and my snorkel – not my snorkel tut tut tut! Not my snorkel to play music! My snorkel to breathe underwater! So a mask and a snorkel and my fins to be able to swim quickly underwater and there is not a lot to see in Launay but I am very very very happy because I saw something incredible – you won’t believe me – I saw a seahorse!

Un hippocampe vous savez ce que c’est ? Un hippocampe c’est une sorte de créature marine qui a un petit peu la tête d’un cheval : ça ressemble un petit peu à un cheval… avec la tête… le nom anglais c’est “sea horse” et donc j’ai vu… j’ai vu un hippocampe et un hippocampe assez différent : il était tout droit : un peu comme un bâton, brun, assez grand : trente centimètres à peu près… Voilà donc c’était une rencontre fantastique sous l’eau, j’étais très contente ! Et maintenant voilà ce champ de potimarrons pas “un petit marron” mais “un potimarron”, voilà !

Do you know what a seahorse is? A seahorse is a kind of sea creature which has a little bit the head of a horse: it looks a little bit like a horse … with the head … the English name is “sea horse” and so I saw… I saw a seahorse and a rather different seahorse: it was straight: a bit like a stick, brown, quite long: about thirty centimeters… So it was a fantastic encounter underwater, was very happy! And now here is this field of pumpkins not “un petit marron” but “un potimarron”, OK!

En fait, ce que j’ai vu c’est ça : ce n’est pas exactement un hippocampe mais une syngnathe… c’est de la même famille…
