French Basketball, Handball &Volleyball Vocabulary ⚾️

You’ll see that in French, a lot of the sports names with the word “ball” can be shorten in French – we use both the long and shorter versions of the word.

Shortening the “Ball” Sports in French

We shorten many sports name in French:

  1. le volleyball = le volley (watch out – ay sound in French, not ee)
  2. le handball = le hand (do say the d)
  3. le basketball = le basket (pronounce it like in English “basket”, with a t),
  4. le football = le foot (do say the t)

BUT never baseball (otherwise it would sound like “baise” in French which means to f..k. So watch out about this one. More on un baiser (noun) ≠ baiser (verb), a terrible French mistake!)

How to say to Practice a Sport in French?

In French, we use mostly two verbs to translated the notion of practicing a sport: faire and jouer.

Faire de + Sport

French uses the verb faire de (contracting into du, de la, des…) to talk about practicing a sport.

  1. Je fais du tennis et de la natation (swimming).
  2. Elle fait du foot (soccer) et des claquettes (tap dance)

Jouer à + Sport

If the sport is also a game, you can use jouer à (contracting into au, aux) :

Je joue au foot, au volley, au rugby…

Remember the 2 constructions of jouer:

  1. jouer à + sports and games = je joue au tennis, je joue aux cartes
  2. jouer de + instruments = je joue du piano, je joue de la guitare

And in the learn French in context story below, note the constructions faire + partitive article, and aimer + definite article.

And now let’s study the French sports-related vocabulary.

And to help me complete the lists, please add your suggestion (French and English translation please – I may not be able to translate it myself!) in the comment section below. Merci !

How do you say Fan and Supporter in French ?

As far as I know, there is no French word for fan. We use English terms :

  1. un fan, une fan (no e, the spelling doesn’t change)
  2. un supporter (always in the masculine)
  3. un supporteur, une supportrice (which comes directly for supporter and to support, and a bit less commonly used)

More about supporter versus soutenir, to support in French

And now, let’s train with all this French sports vocabulary in the context of a story written in easy French. This was part of the homework of Wendy, to whom I gave French lessons by Skype.

Easy Sports Story in Frencch

M : Au revoir.

Voilà, I hope you liked it. It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
