Once upon a time there was a kind man who had a charming daughter. She was sweet, beautiful, and very obedient. Unfortunately, his wife, the mother of his daughter died, and he decided to remarry. He chose a very beautiful woman who had two daughters. โ€œThat way, my daughter will have a new mother and two sisters, besides,โ€ thought he. So he married again but died the same year, leaving his daughter in the care of her new mother, who, jealous of her beauty, was very mean to her.

Poor Cinderella (the name her stepsisters had given her) had to do all the domestic chores; it was she who did the errands, went to the market every morning and had to bring back all the provisions to the house herself. Then she cooked, did the dishes, straightened up the whole house, and did all the laundry for her stepsisters and her stepmother. She also fed the chickens, the dog, the cats, and the horse.

Cinderellaโ€™s stepmother put one of her daughters in Cinderellaโ€™s room and sent Cinderella up to sleep in the attic on an uncomfortable straw bed. She took away her beautiful clothes and gave her servantsโ€™ clothes to wear. However, in spite of all that, Cinderella remained nice and likeable, sweet and pretty, and did all her work willingly, without complaining.

One day, the king announced that he wanted his son the prince to marry, and he was organizing a great ball and inviting all the young women of marriageable age.

ยป ยซ Cendrillon ! Va me chercher mes plus beaux bijoux ! ยป ยซ Cendrillon ! Aide-moi avec mon corset ! ยป ยซ Cendrillon ! viens me coiffer !

The news provoked great excitement in Cinderellaโ€™s house. โ€œCinderella, bring me my new dress! Cinderella, go get my most beautiful jewelry! Cinderella, help me with my corset! Cinderella, come and do my hair!โ€
โ€œCome on, Cinderella,โ€ said her stepmother, โ€œmy girls must be the most beautiful in the kingdom.โ€ And Cinderella kindly helped her stepsisters as best she could.

The meanest sister said to her, โ€œAnd you, Cinderella, donโ€™t you want to go to the ball?โ€ Cinderellaโ€™s face lit up with hope. โ€œMe, to the ball? Butโ€ฆ..yes, that would be fantastic!โ€ Hearing that, her stepsisters and her stepmother burst out laughing. โ€œYou? At the princeโ€™s ball? Really, Cinderella, you would be ridiculous! Look at you! Youโ€™re dirty and so poorly dressed!โ€ But poor Cinderella wanted so much to go to the ball that she said: โ€œMother, I beg you, let me go to the ballโ€. Still mockingly, her stepmother answered, โ€œIf you have finished all your chores this evening, perhaps.โ€

So, all day long, Cinderella worked well and fast; she finished everything she was supposed to do in the house, plus everything her stepsisters ordered her to do for the ball. She washed her prettiest dress and decorated it with pink ribbons and little flowers from the garden, scrubbed her hands and face, and did her hair in a simple but pretty pony tail.

Attendez-moi ! ยป

When it was time to leave for the ball, and her stepsisters and stepmother were getting ready to get into their coach, Cinderella came running down from her room in the attic, โ€œWait for me, wait for me!โ€ She stopped in front of her stepmother, and even with her simple coiffure and her peasantsโ€™ clothes, she was naturally beautiful, and more beautiful than her stepsisters with their extravagant outfits and powdered faces. Her stepmother got furious. She approached Cinderella and rip! tore her dress. โ€œMy poor childโ€, said she, โ€œyour dress was so poorly made. I wanted to put a ribbon back in place and here the whole dress ripped. You canโ€™t go to the ball like that. Go to bed. Weโ€™ll see you in the morning.โ€

ยซ Bouhouhouโ€ฆ.

Poor Cinderella went crying up to her room. โ€œBoo hoo, hoo, itโ€™s really too unfair. I do everything I can for my stepmother and my stepsisters. Iโ€™m the one who does everything in the house, and they are so mean to me! I so wanted to go to the ball. Boo hoo, hoo.โ€

โ€“ ยซ Mais qui รชtes-vous ? ยป dit Cendrillon, en sรฉchant ses larmes.
โ€“ ยซ Je suis la bonne fรฉe, ta marraine ยป. Jโ€™ai vu tout ce qui sโ€™est passรฉ, et je vais tโ€™aider. Tu veux aller au bal du prince ? ยป
ยป

All of a sudden, she felt a soft hand on her shoulder, and she heard a kind voice say to her, โ€œDonโ€™t cry, my child.โ€ When Cinderella opened her eyes, she saw a beautiful woman standing next to her.
โ€œBut who are you?โ€ asked Cinderella drying her eyes.
โ€œI am your good fairy godmother. I saw all that happened, and Iโ€™m going to help you. Do you want to go to the princeโ€™s ball?โ€
โ€œOh, yes,โ€ said Cinderella, โ€œmore than anything in the world.โ€
โ€œThen youโ€™ll need a coach,โ€ said the fairy godmother. โ€œGo get me a big pumpkin from the garden.โ€

Sans comprendre pourquoi, Cendrillon obรฉit.

Without understanding why, Cinderella obeyed. She put the pumpkin in front of the fairy godmother who, with a single wave of her magic wand, transformed it into the prettiest coach one can imagine. Then she said to Cinderella, โ€œGo get me some mice.โ€ Cinderella returned with six gray mice. One more time, the fairy godmother waved her magic wand and turned the mice into six magnificent gray horses. Then, seeing the big horse at the house, the fairy godmother said, โ€œYou will make a perfect coachmanโ€ and poof, she transformed him and the (former) horse found himself sitting in the driverโ€™s seat in a superb silver suit.

Tu as bien compris ? ยป
ยซ Oui, Marraine, dit Cendrillon. Merci, merci ! ยป
ยซ Alors, va vite mon enfant ! ยป dit la fรฉe.
ยซ Euhโ€ฆ Marraine ?

โ€œMy sweet,โ€ said the fairy godmother, โ€œRemember well one thing. You have until midnight, and only midnight, to take advantage of my magic. At the last stroke of midnight, the coach will turn back into a pumpkin, the horses back into to mice, and the coachman back into a horse. Do you understand?โ€
โ€œYes, fairy godmother,โ€ says Cinderella. โ€œThank you, thank you!โ€
โ€œThen go quickly, my child,โ€ said the fairy godmother.
โ€œOh, fairy godmother,โ€ said Cinderella, showing her servantโ€™s dress.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ asked the fairy godmother. โ€œAh!!! But yes, of course, what am I thinking?โ€
And the fairy godmother waved the magic wand one last time over Cinderellaโ€™s head and surrounded it by a turbulent cloud. Her dress changed into the most beautiful gown in the world, colored like a rainbow, covered with diamonds and precious stones. Her hair was done in a magnificent chignon, and on her tiny feet, two charming glass slippers, most delicate and comfortable, appeared.

ยซ Oh ! Madameโ€ฆ merci, merci !

โ€œOh, fairy godmother, thank you, thank you!โ€ said Cinderella who had never seen anything more beautiful.
โ€œSave your smiles for the prince.โ€ said the fairy godmother.โ€ Have a good time and especially, do not forget to come home before midnight.โ€ Poofโ€ฆ..the fairy godmother disappeared in a cloud of stars.

Cinderella jumped into her coach and arrived at the castle. As soon as he saw her, the prince fell in love with her. He invited her to dance, and she was so beautiful and graceful that everyone stopped to look at them. Then he invited her to dine with him. Her manners were elegant, and she insisted on sharing with everyone the delicacies that the prince offered her. Then they went for a walk in the garden. She was intelligent and funny, and the more time the prince spent with her, the more in love he was.

Mais tout dโ€™un coup ยซ dongโ€ฆ. ยป
โ€“ ยซ Mon Dieu !
ยซ Oรน allez vous ? ยป
โ€“ ยซ Au revoir, au revoir, merci ! ยป dit Cendrillon en courant.
โ€“ ยซ Mais, maisโ€ฆ ยป dit le prince, ยซ Attendez ! je ne connais mรชme pas votre nom !!

But suddenly, โ€œdongโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..โ€
โ€œGoodness,โ€ said Cinderella, โ€œis it already midnight? I must leaveโ€ฆexcuse meโ€ฆgood-bye,โ€
and she began to run toward her coach.
โ€œBut whatโ€™s happening?โ€ wondered the prince who didnโ€™t understand. โ€œWhere are you going?โ€
โ€œGood-bye, good-bye. Thank you!โ€ said Cinderella, running.
โ€œBut, but,โ€ said the prince, โ€œI donโ€™t even know your name!!โ€ And he started to run after her.

She arrived at her coach, but in getting into it, she lost one of her little glass slippers. It was too late to pick it up, and the prince got there running. โ€œThe whip, coachman!โ€ shouted Cinderella, and her six horses dashed off into the night, too quickly for the prince to hold them back. On the ground he noticed the tiny glass slipper which sparkled in the night, and he had an idea.

Le lendemain, le roi fit annoncer que toutes les jeunes filles de la rรฉgion devaient essayer cette chaussure. Lorsque le serviteur du roi arriva chez Cendrillon, sa belle mรจre et ses filles lโ€™attendaient avec impatience ;
โ€“ ยซ Ma chaussure ! ยป dit lโ€™aรฎnรฉe, ยซ Comme cโ€™est gentil de me lโ€™avoir rapportรฉeโ€ฆ ยป
โ€“ ยซ Mais non !

The next day, the king made an announcement that all the young women of the kingdom were to try on this slipper. When the kingโ€™s servant came to Cinderellaโ€™s house, her stepmother and stepsisters were waiting impatiently. โ€œMy slipper!โ€ said the elder, โ€œItโ€™s so nice of you to have brought it backโ€ฆโ€ โ€œBut no,โ€ said the younger, โ€œitโ€™s my slipper that I lost at the ball last night.โ€

ยซJe suis dรฉsolรฉ ยป dit le serviteur qui voulait partir de cette maison au plus vite ! Les filles le retenaient par le bras ;
โ€“ ยซ Mais je vous assure que cโ€™est ma chaussure ! disait lโ€™aรฎnรฉe ยป.
โ€“ ยซ Non !
ยป

Both stuck out their feet toward the servant, who, a little irritated, told them, โ€œCalm down, young ladies, each one of you will have her turn!โ€ He tried the slipper first on one, then the other, but their feet were so big and wide that they could only get their toes into them with difficulty! โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ said the servant who wanted to leave that house as soon as possible. The girls held him back. โ€œBut Iโ€™m sure that itโ€™s my slipper,โ€ said the elder. โ€œNo, itโ€™s mine!โ€ said the younger. โ€œI donโ€™t know why it doesnโ€™t fit me today. My feet must have swelled during the night!โ€ โ€œLet me go, come now,โ€ said the servant, โ€œthis slipper is much too small for you!โ€

He finally got away and was about to leave when they heard a small voice at the back of the room. โ€œMe, too, I would like to try on the slipper.โ€ The servant turned around and saw Cinderella whom he found very pretty in spite of her servantโ€™s clothing.

โ€“ ยซ Mais, Cendrillon !
ยป

Youโ€™re ridiculous! Youโ€™re only a servant. You may not try on this slipper,โ€ said her stepmother.
โ€œIโ€™m the daughter of my father, the master of this house,โ€ said Cinderella, โ€œand the king said that all the young women should try on this slipper.โ€
โ€œSheโ€™s right,โ€ said the servant who found her more and more delightful. โ€œYour foot, I beg you.โ€

โ€“ ยซ mais, maisโ€ฆ.

Cinderella took off her wooden shoe and stretched out toward the servant a beautiful, very small white foot that fit with no difficulty at all into the little slipper
โ€œBut, butโ€ฆโ€ฆitโ€™s impossible,โ€ said her stepmother.
โ€œNo, mother, itโ€™s the truth, and look, I have the other one,โ€ said Cinderella, taking the second glass slipper from her apron pocket.

As soon as she put on the second slipper, her clothes and her coiffure were magically transformed. She regained her splendor of the previous night.

ยซ Pardon, pardon ยป dirent-elle.

Recognizing the beautiful young woman, her stepmother and stepsisters threw themselves at her feet. โ€œExcuse us, excuse us,โ€ they said. And Cinderella who was as good as she was beautiful, pardoned them wholeheartedly, and that all she wished was that they be good friends.

The servant took Cinderella to the castle where the prince was so happy to find his princess that he asked her to marry him that day. Cinderella loved the prince, too, but she preferred to wait a little longer in order to be sure that he would be a good husband.

Et ils vรฉcurent tous heureux et eurent beaucoup dโ€™enfants.

She invited her stepmother and stepsisters to live in the castle with them, and introduced them to friends of the prince who wanted to get married. Finally, Cinderella and her sisters got married the next summer and the kingdom celebrated for a month. They all lived happily ever after and had lots of children.
