So now letβs explore βles sous-vΓͺtementsβ β French lingerie vocabulary. We also use the word βles dessousβ, more like undergarments, a bit old-fashioned.
I understand the English vocabulary for lingerie varies quite a lot between US, Australian and British Englishβ¦ Iβm French and American myself, so thatβs the English Iβll use β but should you need a picture, Iβll direct you to a very famous β and mainstream β French lingerie store Etam.com.
Boy, writing this article made me discover a lot of new vocabulary, in French and in English!
15 French Underwear Terms
French Underwear Vocabulary for Men
- un slip = briefs
- un caleçon = boxer shorts
- un boxer = boxer briefs (pronounce it like βboxairβ in French)
- un maillot-de-corps = undershirt (not that used anymore, or used by itself, without the shirt!)
Sleepwear TermsΒ in French
- un pyjama β pyjamas β note that more often than not, pyjamas are singular in French, although both spellings are possible.
- une chemise de nuit = nightgown, not to be mistaken with βune robe de soirΓ©eβ which is an evening gown!
- un peignoir = bathrobe
- une robe de chambre = a dressing gown
Slimwear and Slips French Translations
- Une gaine β slimming underwear β we usually specify which part weβd like slimmed: βune culotte gainanteβ = slimming panty, βun body gainantβ = slimming bodysuitβ¦
- βUn juponβ is a skirt slip
- βune combinaisonβ a dress slip.
LegwearΒ French Vocabulary
Usually used in the pluralβ¦
- Une chaussette β a sock
- Une socquette β ankle sock
- Un bas β stockings
- Un collant β tights, leggings
How To Say Womenβs Knickers and Panties in French?
- une culotte β generic for womenβs panty, knickers
- un hipster β hiphugger
- un boxer, un shorty = shorties
- un tanga β cheekies
- un string β a thong
- Note we seldom use βun slipβ for womenβs panties, but itβs not unheard of.
How To Say Bra in French?
βUn soutien-gorgeβ is a bra.
It may be the weirdest word of all, since it literally translates in βhold the throatβ. Now, in older French, βla gorgeβ referred to both neck and chest area, and older bras were a real contraption often starting at the neckβ¦ So there is a reason behind the madness of this word!
Note that βun soutien-gorgeβ becomes βdes soutiens-gorgeβ in the plural, with an S at soutien, but no change for gorge. More about to hold in French.
Names of Bras & Bras Vocabulary in French
- une brassiΓ¨re β a sports bra (watch out though that this word is mostly used in France for a piece of clothing for baby: some kind of shirt that clothes in the back. For sports bra, we mostly say βsoutien gorge de sportβ).
- un soutien gorge rembourrΓ© β padded bra
- un soutien gorge bandeau β band shape bra
- un ampliforme β push up bra
- un soutien-gorge corbeille β demi-bra
- un bonnet A, B, C, D, E β a bra cup
- avec bretelles, sans bretelles β with straps, strapless
- les armatures β wires
More Sexy Lingerie Vocabulary In French
- Un body β a bodysuit
- un caraco β a camisole (note that the French word βune camisole (de force)β usually refers to a straitjacketβ¦ go figureβ¦)
- un bustier β a teddy β not to be mistaken with βun corsetβ in French which is actually a corset with strings on which you pull to shape-up a womanβs waistβ¦ Note that βune robe bustierβ means a strapless dress.
- une guΓ©piΓ¨re β a teddy with garter attached (sometimes called a corset in the US)
- un porte-jarretelles β garter belt
- une jarretelle β a garter. Please, watch out with this oneβ¦ Dictionaries are infamous to translate the English word suspenders by βdes jarretellesβ, when most people were looking for suspenders for pants (βdes bretellesβ in French). It doesnβt bring out quite the same mental picture!!
- une nuisette β a (tiny) nightgown
- un dΓ©shabillΓ© β a sexy robe
French Women and Lingerie
French women like lingerie. In my town of Paimpol, Brittany, 8000 inhabitants, we have two dedicated lingerie stores on top of supermarkets and general clothing stores where you can also find more mainstream lingerie. However, the French lingerie stores sell, how to put it, βclassyβ lingerie: comfortable and pretty (yes, it exists), sometimes sexy, but to some limit. We are in the world of Erotica, not porn.
I was very surprised the first time I pushed open the door to a βlingerieβ store in the US (on Bostonβs Newbury street, so not a shabby neighborhood at all) to find βlingerieβ items that would only be seen in some Pigalle βchaud Parisβ sex shops. So, there is definitely a cultural gap here.
Moreover, I feel that in France, women of all shape and ages wear lingerie: they wear it because it makes them feel pretty, and itβs not something that necessarily wears-off with age. Of course, you also have plenty of dedicated lingerie chain stores for teens, with nothing larger than a B cup. Oh well, no country is perfect!
Now, letβs practice the French underwear and lingerie vocabulary in a learn French in context dialogue.

Zoe enters an Etam shop, and proceeds to look at the different lingerie models. After a few minutes, a salesperson comes to see her.
Hello Maβam, may I help you? - Bonjour Madame.
No, thanks, Iβm only browsing. Wellβ¦ not really. Iβm looking for a pretty set for a special occasion: my twentieth wedding anniversary. - Ah, fΓ©licitations.
Ah, congratulations. - Merci Madame.
Thank you. So Iβm looking for a sexy set, sophisticated, but letβs be honest, Iβm no longer twentyβ¦ - Que pensez-vous de cette guΓ©piΓ¨re noire et rouge ?
What do you think of this black and red teddy?
Oh my, itβs a bit much for me.
Then, maybe this pretty blue bra and panty set made of cotton?
(Laughing) Wow, between the cotton set and the see through teddy, there must be a fair middle, donβt you think? - Bon, vous aimez la dentelle ?
Alright. Do you like lace? - Oui, jβaime beaucoup la dentelle.
Yes, I love lace. - Et vous avez une couleur prΓ©fΓ©rΓ©e ?
And do you have a favorite color?
I donβt quite fancy red for lace, nor white: Iβm no longer a bride, and certainly not fushia pink. I like black, but Iβd enjoy something a bit different, maybe turquoise, itβs a fashionable color lately.
Actually, itβs one of the colors of our new line. We have this set which is very pretty: the panty comes in regular, shorties and cheeky.
Yes, but the bra looks quite tiny to me. A small wireless triangle, itβs not going to work for me. Iβma D cup. But wait a secondβ¦ I like that sexy nightgown over-there, with the matching robe. Do you have it in my size? - Je regarde. Oui voilΓ .
Let me see. Yes, here it is. Ah, and I also have this long silk nightgown, with a pretty coral, red and emerald print. It shows a gorgeous low cut back, but is not vulgar. - Jβadore lβimprimΓ©.
I love the print. Hum, Iβm not sure theyβll be room for my boobsβ¦ Weβll see. Iβll try it on. Where are the dressing rooms? - Au fond du magasin, Γ droite.
At the end of the store, to the right. - Merci beaucoup madame.
Thanks a lot.
You are welcome. Donβt hesitate to call me should you need another size or another item. - Dβaccord, merci.
Sure thing, thanks.
