Welcome to Jugon-Les-Lacs – French Story & Translation

Author: Suzanne

Let’s practice our French and discover Jugon-les-lacs in Brittany with this French English bilingual story. You’ll also learn how to translate city in French: ville ou cité ?

1 – How do you say City in French: Ville ou Cité ?

  1. “Une ville” (bigger) or “un village” (smaller) are the common French words used to translate ‘city’, ‘town’.
  2. the word “une cité” is quite an old-fashioned word for town.
  3. “La cité” nowadays mostly points to “the projects”, poor neighborhoods.
If you said : “j’habite dans la cité de X ” to say “I live in the city of X”, people may understand you are telling them you live in the projects of this town… So it’s not the same at all…
  4. Yet the word “cité” is still used to say ‘city, town’ in some expressions : ‘une petite cité de caractère’ is label given to small historic towns as you can see on the sign below.
  5. So, to avoid any bad mistakes, I suggest you use “une ville” or “un village”.

For my first article, I want to talk about Jugon les Lacs. This is where I have lived for twelve years in the northeast of Brittany. Jugon les Lacs, it is a ‘small town character’. This is a name given to certain villages in France, where there is a good proportion of the buildings which are beautiful, historic and well preserved.

Perhaps the best example of these buildings is the Hotel Jugon Sevoy on the photo. It is a house that dates from 1634. But beware, even if its name is ‘hotel’, it is a private home – you cannot book it!

Another lovely house is the Auberge de l’Ecu, on Martray Square, the central square of Jugon. Today, the Ecu is a restaurant. In the photo you can see tables and chairs on the terrace outside the restaurant.

There are two other restaurants and a creperie in Jugon. There are also bakeries, a small supermarket and about thirty other shops and services. We have two bars, a post office, and of course, a tourist office.

4 – The Rivers and Lakes of Jugon Les Lacs

There are two small rivers in Jugon, and two large lakes. Small bridges cross the rivers. It looks nice in the summer when the bridges are covered in flowers.

Both lakes are artificial. The one south of Jugon dates from the thirteenth century. It was Benedictine monks who built a dam and the lake formed after. Before, Jugon was very marshy and unhealthy. But this leads to a very singular detail: the lake is higher than the village!  From the central square, one goes up ‘Castle Street’ to see the lake.

Jugon Lake (the lake to the south) is very large. There is an outdoor sports station and a house of fishing by the lake. At the Nature Sports Resort, you can do water sports such as sailing, kayaking or rowing, or land activities such as mountain biking, archery, and hiking. At the House of fishing, you can find a lot of information on fish and small animals of the aquatic environment.

There are no motor boats on the lake – it is forbidden. It is also forbidden to swim in the lake. But there are two beautiful swimming pools at the campsite next to the lake, and the pools are open to the general public.

The second lake is north of Jugon and is called the Arguenon Lake, and it’s even bigger than Jugon Lake. This is a drinking water reservoir. One can hike around the lake too, and it’s very nice and very, very quiet.

Jugon has existed since the seventh century, and its past is very interesting. But that’s another story! I’ll maybe tell you about it one day.

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
