At the French Open – French Story & Translation

Author: Chantal

Today, tennis fan Andrea is sharing her amazing tennis day at Roland Garros (the French Open) – she can take that off her bucket list!

Bonjour !

Hi! My name is Andrea and I’m Australian. I go each year for a French immersion homestay at Chantal’s and she organizes something for me related to my interests.

Last year we went together to a ballet because I love dance.

When I told her, my dream was to go see a tennis match at The French Open, she managed to get hold of some tickets.

So here we are on our way to The French Open by train. I am very excited to discover this mythical place.

It was warm but the sky was a bit grey.

Chantal me dit : « Tant mieux !

Chantal tells me: Â« Better like that! Because the courts are not covered and when the sun shines too much, you burn for sure! But the Philippe Chatrier court also called « le Central”, will be covered in 2020 with a retractable roof. It will be made out of 11 airplane wings in honor of Roland Garros! I think it will be spectacular”

We don’t have seats at “le Central” but at the Susan Lenglen court (stadium).

Chantal explains to me that Susan Lenglen, the famous tennis player comes from her department because she lived her youth in CompiĂšgne and it was her father who gave her her first tennis racket when she was eleven.

We saw three matches that day:

  • Madison Keys contre Katerina Sinakova.

Madison Keys versus Katerina Sinakova

The end of the Kei Nishikori / Benoit Paire match . The match was stopped the day before because of the night fall. There was a fantastic atmosphere! The public was electric, and the suspense amazing.

  • Le match Alexander Zverev contre Fabio Fognini.

The Alexander Zverev versus Fabio Fognini match.

We had a sandwich break and we decided to have a coffee. It was crazy, I‘ve never seen so many people!

We were all squeezed one against the others, a bit like the song of Edith Piaf “the crowd”. I really had the feeling I was living this song!

When we went back to our seats, the third match had already started. And suddenly, it began to rain a bit. A few people took out their umbrella! It was strange! It wouldn’t be allowed at home in Australia. Fortunately, it only rained for a few minutes.

Before leaving, I bought 3 caps and a tee-shirt in one of the boutiques of The French Opes. They will be nice presents for my friends.

We came back in the evening. We were tired but we had a marvellous day.

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
