I recently was lucky to learn French in immersion at Pierreâs, in the Lot-et-Garonne region. The landscapes and villages were a great source of inspiration.
Drawing and Sketching in France
Esquisser me plaĂźt beaucoup quand je voyage.
I like to sketch when I travel. I always keep a sketchbook with me and a pencil, a pen and often a small watercolor set (learn the French painting vocabulary). I always find a subject of interest wherever I go. I donât have a specific technique when I sketch. I look at the scene and I begin to make the sketch without a lot of reflection.
A Lively Sketch
Recently I discovered the importance of making the lines more irregular instead of straight and rigid lines. It makes the sketch more interesting. The more irregular lines gives the sketch more life and animation.
The rural landscapes of Lot-et-Garonne offer unlimited subjects for the artist to study.
I work intuitively, I look for the relationships among the forms, the lines, the proportions. I also try to express my feelings into the sketch, the way the sun creates patterns of light and dark, the effects of the wind and the sense of happiness. One of the objects of art is to make the invisible visible. The more I look, the more I see, it allows me to fix the scene in my mind forever and when Iâm home, I still remember the scene thanks to the experience of drawing it.

Using Colors in Watercolors
Sometimes when I have more time to draw I add colors in watercolor. I often begin painting the sky with a range of blues to give the sky a sense of atmosphere. I start with a darker blue on the top of the page and I lighten the blue as it approaches the landscape or the buildings.
I decide where to place the colors to make the composition more interesting. I put one color in several places to give a rhythm to the composition.
Gouache Painting in France
Here are other works done in gouache this time. I truly enjoyed my immersion homestay in France: in the Lot-et-Garonne, the people are very friendly and often came to ask me questions when they saw me painting. Painting provides yet another opportunity to strike up a conversation in French!
