Hello everybody !
Nous sommes deux soeurs australiennes, Suzanne et Géraldine qui avons la chance de voyager en France et en Suisse pendant un an. Fin octobre nous avons passé deux semaines d’immersion en français chez Raymonde en Suisse francophone.
We are two Australian sisters, Suzanne and Geraldine who are so lucky to be travelling in France and Switzerland for one year. At the end of October, we spent two weeks’ in French immersion in French speaking Switzerland at the home of Raymonde.
Raymonde nous a emmené découvrir la superbe région du Lavaux où la Terre, l’Eau et le Ciel se rejoignent pour créer une endroit totalement magique.
Raymonde took us to see and taste the remarkable region of « Le Lavaux », where Earth, Water and Sky meet to create a magical place.
1 – Le Lavaux in Switzerland : Land of Three Suns
Au 12ème siècle, des moines ont été les premiers à cultiver des vignes sur les pentes très raides du bord du lac Léman.Ces moines ont travaillé très dur pour créer un vignoble en terrasses soutenu par des murs de pierre.
The monks of the 12th Century are believed to have been the first to cultivate vineyards on the very steep slopes beside Lake Geneva.These monks terraced the land and held the vineyard in place with strong stonewalls.
Mais les vignobles ont besoin de beaucoup de lumière et de chaleur, donc les moines ont dû avoir une intervention céleste parce que c’était leur solution; trois soleils!
But vineyards need a lot of sunlight and warmth, so the monks must have had some heavenly intervention because this was their solution; three suns!

2 – A Swiss Heritage Almost Lost!

This landscape, one of the most breathtaking in the world, was almost destroyed in the 1970’s!
Les promoteurs ont voulu capitaliser sur cet emplacement exceptionnel en rasant les vignobles au bulldozer et en construisant des hôtels de luxe, des appartements et des maisons.
Developers wanted to capitalize on this outstanding location by bulldozing the vineyards and erecting luxury hotels, apartments and houses.

Les viticulteurs du Lavaux ont fait appel à Franz Weber, environnementaliste et militant suisse, pour les soutenir dans leur lutte pour protéger les 830 hectares de vignes en terrasses qui s’étendent sur 30 km. le long des magnifiques rives du lac Léman. Ainsi, l’association «Save the Lavaux» a été créée.
The winemakers of the Lavaux called on Franz Weber, a Swiss environmentalist and activist, to support them in their fight to protect the 830 hectares of terraced vineyards stretching 30 km along the magnificent shores of Lake Geneva. Thus the « Save the Lavaux Association » was created.
Enfin, après des décennies de débat, en 2007, le Lavaux a reçu la protection en tant que site du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO.
Finally, after decades of debate, in 2007 the Lavaux was granted protection as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
3 – A Unique Wine Producing Region
Le Lavaux bénéficie d’un climat tempéré: les aspects méridionaux des terrasses avec le reflet du soleil sur le lac réchauffant les anciens remparts donnent une atmosphère méditerranéenne à cette région.
Le Lavaux benefits from a temperate climate: the southern aspects of the terraces with the reflection of the sun on the lake warming the ancient walls gives a Mediterranean feel to this region.
Ainsi, de ce mélange unique de terre, de soleil et d’eau vient le cépage Chasselas, le plus cultivé du Lavaux.
Thus, from this unique blend of earth, sun and water comes the Chasselas grape, the most widely cultivated in the Lavaux.
Le Chasselas produit un vin blanc magnifique, léger et rafraîchissant et agréable à partager. The Chasselas produces a gorgeous white wine, which is light and refreshing and lovely to share.
Le Lavaux produit également quelques rouges notamment un somptueux pinot noir. The Lavaux also produces some reds notably a sumptuous Pinot noir.
