If you have never visited the Lot-et-Garonne region of France, you are in for a real treat. This region has so much to offer, and if you are able to stay with a French host family in immersion as I did, all the better!
Picture gentle rolling hills covered with fruit trees, bright yellow fields of sunflowers, castle ruins, windmills, and 13th century Bastide villages that lie atop every hill, waiting to be explored.
2 â A sunny Sunday in the Lot-et-Garonne
I was lucky enough to be able to visit many of these places last Sunday with Pierre, my host, and French teacher. The drive alone was worth the time, as we passed through bucolic landscapes and I counted all the varieties of birds, trees, and flowers that I saw out the window.
3 â Villages of the Lot-et-Garonne
Pierre explained to me the origins of the 13th century medieval Bastides. Each little village seems more beautiful than the last, complete with Romanesque churches, cafés, fountains, and well-maintained flower gardens at every turn.
4 â Market Day in Pujols
We stopped in Pujols, where Sunday is market day! French markets are unlike any other, and a must-do when you are in France. The sights, smells, and sounds of local artisans and farmers selling their goods is incomparable!
I wandered through the various stalls with Pierre and admired the bright red tomatoes, the ripe luscious apricots, and the smell of roasted chicken and potatoes with locals lined up to purchase their Sunday meal.
I eyed the superb olive collection and sampled the best melon I have ever had, juicy and perfectly ripe.
Pierre suggested that we try a cake from a local vendor, and we decided on a prune cake, lightly sweet, moist, and delicious!
Agen prunes are famous coming this region and are celebrated worldwide. I was also thrilled to find end-of-season Mara des Bois, my very favorite French wild strawberries, small and perfumed. Each bite of these strawberries is like eating a spoonful of jam.
A new approach to learning both traditional and modern French logically structured for English speakers.
5 â Fairy-Tale in the Lot-et-Garonne
As the bells chimed in the church and I looked out through the Bastide door onto the amazing view below, I was enchanted.
The village reminded me of a fairy tale with its charming cottages, cobbled streets, and flowers and ivy on every home.
After buying some fresh bread for dinner (the last loaf!), Pierre suggested that we have lunch on the square, which turned out to be an excellent choice.
I decided on an omelet and a salad, which may sound simple, but it was expertly made. In truth, I thought my omelet was close to perfection. If only I could make an omelet like that at home!
After lunch, Pierre took me to visit a village called TourtrĂšs with a lovely old windmill. He explained that once upon a time, a poet actually lived in it!
The views from each of these villages is magnificent, so I highly recommend spending some time just sitting on a bench enjoying the beauty that surrounds you as well as the peace and quiet.
