1 – Amiens, Student City

J’emmène souvent mes étudiants de français en immersion dans mon ancienne ville étudiante !

I often take my French immersion students to the city I formally studied in!

Ah Amiens ! C’est une ville que j’aime beaucoup ! J’ai plein de bons souvenirs dans cette ville.
C’est une ville magnifique avec plein de trésors à découvrir. Il suffit de se promener et chaque petit coin peut vous surprendre.

Ah, Amiens! It’s a city that I really like a lot! I have lots of good memories in this city. It’s a beautiful city with lots of treasures to discover.
Just walk around and every little corner can surprise you.

On peut s’y reposer et boire un café en terrasse face à une très jolie place. On peut flâner dans les ruelles du quartier Saint Leu, faire du shopping dans la rue des Trois Cailloux, découvrir la maison de Jules Verne (auteur français mondialement célèbre).

You can rest and have a coffee on the terrace facing a very pretty square. You can stroll through the alleys of the Saint Leu district, go shopping in the rue des Trois Cailloux, discover the house of Jules Verne (world famous French author). 

Et étonnamment c’est une ville où la nature ne manque pas, grâce au jardin des plantes, au parc Saint Pierre ou encore aux fameux Hortillonnages.
Mais aujourd’hui je vais vous parler de la Cathédrale !

And surprisingly it’s a city where there’s no lack of nature, thanks to the garden of plants, the Saint Pierre park or the famous Hortillonnages.
But today I’m going to talk to you about the Cathedral!

2 – La cathédrale Notre Dame d’Amiens

En 1218, l’ancienne Cathédrale avait été détruite par un grand incendie. Mais 2 ans après, en 1220, la reconstruction débute par la nef. Et le travail accompli est impressionnant !

In 1218, the old Cathedral was destroyed by a big fire. But 2 years later, in 1220, the reconstruction begins with the nave.
And the work done is impressive!

La Cathédrale Notre Dame D’Amiens est la plus vaste de France et l’une des plus vastes du monde de l’architecture gothique !
Mais il n’y a pas que sa taille qui impressionne. La façade est pleine de magnifiques détails. C’est incroyable !

The Cathedral Notre Dame D’Amiens is the largest in France and one of the largest in the world of Gothic architecture!
But it’s not just its size that is impressive. The facade is full of beautiful details. It’s incredible!

L’édifice s’ouvre par trois grands portiques. Les fondations de ces portiques contiennent cinquante-deux statues plus grandes que nature. Mais ce que je préfère c’est le grand portail central. L’ornementation est extraordinaire !

The building opens via 3 large porticos. The foundations of these porticos contain 52 larger-than-life statues. But what I prefer is the big central portal. The ornamentation is extraordinary!

Chacun de mes étudiants s’exclame toujours : « Qu’est-ce que c’est beau ! C’est incroyable tous ces détails !»

Every one of my students always cry out: “How incredibly beautiful! All these details, it’s amazing! “

En effet, au-dessus de ce portail il y a plein de statues très détaillées. Ce qui est intéressant, c’est qu’à l’origine la cathédrale et particulièrement les statues étaient colorées. Mais les couleurs se sont effacées avec le temps.

Indeed, above this gate are many statues with lots of details. What’s interesting is that, originally, the cathedral and particularly the statues were full of colors. But the colors washed off over time.

C’est pour ça que chaque année, en été, il y a un spectacle de lumière qui se joue tous les soirs. Ce spectacle s’appelle « Amiens, la cathédrale en couleurs » et il permet de redonner ses couleurs à la cathédrale grâce à des images numériques.

This is why every year, in summer, there is a light show exhibit every night. This show is called “Amiens, the cathedral in color” and gives the colors back to the cathedral thanks to digital images.

Un jour une étudiante m’a demandé :

• « Est-ce que ces statuettes signifient quelque chose ? Elles sont très belles et un peu bizarres ! »
• « Effectivement ! On appelle ce portail, le portail du Jugement Dernier ! »
• « Ah bon pourquoi ?»
• « Si tu regardes bien, toutes ces statuettes sont divisées en trois registres ! Et chacun représente, selon la religion, les différentes étapes du Jugement qui aura lieu pour tous les mortels à la fin des Temps ! »

One day a student asked me:

• “Do these statuettes mean anything? They are very beautiful and a little weird! “
• “Right! This portal is called the portal of the Last Judgment! “
• “Oh, really why?”
• “If you look carefully, all these statuettes are divided into three registers! And each represents, according
  to religion, the different stages of the Final Judgment that will happen to all mortals at the End of Time!”

Si vous venez voir Amiens et sa Cathédrale, vous verrez parmi ces détails qu’il y a par exemple :
– la résurrection des morts annoncée par différents coups de trompette,
– Il y a aussi le Christ sur son trône intervenant pour la libération des âmes…

If you come to see Amiens and its Cathedral, you will see, among these details, that there are for example:
– the resurrection of the dead announced by different trumpet blows
– There is also Christ on his throne intervening for the liberation of souls …

3 – The Inside of the Amiens Cathedral

Quand on entre dans la cathédrale, l’intérieur est tout aussi joli que l’extérieur !
Il y a des grandes verrières décorées avec des très beaux vitraux, et beaucoup d’autres choses à voir !

When you enter the cathedral, the inside is just as pretty as the outside!
There are large decorated glass canopies with gorgeous stained glass panels, and many other things to see!

Est-ce que vous saviez qu’un trésor est caché dans cette cathédrale ? Hé oui ! Parmi plein d’autres choses, il y a le crâne de Saint Jean-Baptiste !

Did you know that a treasure is hidden in this cathedral? Indeed! Among many other things, there is the skull of Saint John the Baptist!

« Mais qui est Saint Jean-Baptiste ? »
Dans le christianisme, il s’agit du prophète qui a annoncé la venue de Jésus ! Je vous invite donc à venir visiter ce magnifique monument et ses trésors !
