Recently, Jack did a French immersion residential homestay at Suzanne’s. He came with her grandfather (also called Jack!) Jack senior has an ex-colleague, Walt, who has a holiday home in France, not far from Suzanne’s. Walt invited the two Jacks to spend some time there … and then Jack Junior wrote a short illustrated article about this visit using his own words in French.

Fifteen Years Old Goes to France

Visiting Carantec and Taureau Castle

We arrived at the port of Carantec to board a boat that was going to the Château du Taureau. We went to the castle for almost 2 hours. The castle was being restored. So there were people working on the castle. I saw where the guns had been located there. When we finished in the castle, we went to Walt’s house.

We stayed there for an hour. After that, we walked to the center of Carantec to eat. I ate steak. After eating, we went back to Walt’s house via a smugglers’ path. On this path, we found some Nazi buildings. We arrived at the house and we slept.

The next morning we ate breakfast and went on another boat. This boat went to an Island, named île de Batz. We rented bikes and cycled for 2 hours around the island. On the island, there was a large garden named The Exotic Garden. This garden receives flowers, trees, and plants from all over the world.

After that, we ate and went back on the boat to go home. Walt’s house was beautiful because it was on a hill overlooking the sea and the château du Taureau. After returning to his house, we stayed there for 30 minutes and after that, we went back to Suzanne’s house.

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
