French Electrical Vocabulary & Christmas Lights in Dinan

Vers la fin de l’année, je commence à me poser la question : qu’est-ce que je vais faire comme excursion avec mes étudiants d’immersion en français de French Today ?   Certains sites touristiques ferment fin septembre pour ne pas rouvrir avant avril de l’année suivante. Et puis la météo n’est pas toujours agréable, passé la fête de la Toussaint. Quelquefois le temps est plutôt humide en Bretagne, il faut l’admettre. En décembre, d’ailleurs, les journées sont courtes, et le nombre d’heures que l’on peut passer à l’extérieur est limité.

Towards the end of the year, I begin to ask myself: What am I going to do as an excursion with my french immersion students at French Today? Some tourist sites close at the end of September and don’t reopen before April of the following year. And also the weather is not always nice, once All Saints Day is past. One must admit that sometimes the weather is rather humid in Brittany. What’s more, in December, the days are short, and the number of hours that can be spent outside is limited.

Mais voici une excursion parfaite pour décembre :  une visite à Dinan pour aller voir les illuminations de Noël !

But here is a perfect excursion for December: a visit to Dinan to see the Christmas lights!

Nous garons la voiture dans le parking en bas des remparts, pas loin du château. La municipalité de Dinan a décidé de rendre les parkings gratuits tout le week-end et tous les week-ends en décembre, pour encourager le public à venir. Quelle bonne idée ! C’est la fin du dimanche après-midi, il fait assez froid, mais beaucoup de gens sont sortis faire une promenade en famille, et ça donne immédiatement de l’ambiance.

We park the car in the parking lot at the bottom of the ramparts, not far from the castle. The municipality of Dinan has decided to make the car parks free all weekend and every weekend in December, to encourage the public to come. What a good idea ! It’s the end of Sunday afternoon, it’s quite cold, but a lot of people have gone out for a family walk, and it immediately creates a good atmosphere.

Nous sommes venues visiter la ville avant la tombée de la nuit faire du lèche-vitrine devant les magasins décorés pour Noël… mais heureuse surprise, beaucoup des magasins sont ouverts. Nous prenons notre temps devant la cave à vin, les boutiques de vêtements, devant les expositions de spécialités bretonnes ou d’autres idées de cadeaux.

We have come before nightfall to visit the town, and to go window shopping in front of the shops that are decorated for Christmas … but a pleasant surprise, many of the shops are open. We take our time in front of the wine cellar, the clothes shops, in front of the exhibitions of Breton specialties or other gift ideas. 

Puis nous nous dirigeons vers la rue du Jerzual, sans doute la rue la plus célèbre du vieux Dinan qui fait un lien entre le quartier médiéval et le port de Dinan. C’est toujours pittoresque, et je pense que les illuminations de Noël vont ajouter une touche magique. Et j’ai raison !

Then we head towards the Rue du Jerzual, probably the most famous street of old Dinan which makes a link between the medieval quarter and the port of Dinan. It’s always picturesque, and I think the Christmas lights are going to add a magical touch. And I’m right!

Là aussi, certains magasins sont ouverts. Ça prend un bon quart d’heure pour descendre le Jerzual, puis remonter.

It takes a good quarter of an hour to go down the Jerzual, then back up.

Et là, la nuit est tombée, et nous allons de rue en rue pour regarder les illuminations. Dinan n’est pas très grand, c’est une ville de 11.000 habitants, mais la municipalité fait beaucoup d’efforts pour présenter un beau spectacle à Noël.

And then, night has fallen, and we go from street to street to look at the illuminations. Dinan is not very big, it is a town of 11,000 inhabitants, but the municipality makes a lot of effort to put on a beautiful show at Christmas.

Vers la place de l’Hôtel de Ville, beaucoup de gens sont installés sur les terrasses des cafés malgré de froid.   Nous faisons de même et nous commandons un chocolat chaud pour moi (puisque je conduis !) et un vin chaud pour mon étudiante Moira. Même le parking devant l’Hôtel de Ville est très joli, avec des guirlandes lumineuses dans les arbres.

Towards the Town Hall Square, many people are sitting on the cafe terraces in spite of cold weather. We do the same and we order a hot chocolate for me (since I’m driving!) and a mulled wine for my student Moira. Even the parking lot in front of the Hotel de Ville is very pretty, with fairy lights in the trees.

Je me demande ce que le chevalier et héros breton Jehan de Beaumanoir (1310 – 1366) aurait pensé de tout cela !

I wonder what the knight and Breton hero Jehan de Beaumanoir (1310 – 1366) would have thought of all this!
