Mainly built in the 17th Century, under Louis XIV reign, it is an impressive lot of buildings, which was used, through History, to protect the island against invaders (English attacked the island several times and once owned it), but also to jail political prisoners.

Nowadays, greatly restored, it is worth a visit, the view on Le Palais and the Coast is spectacular. In la Citadelle, there is a Museum (about the island’s History) and a very peculiar Hotel. One can visit most of the Fortress buildings and its garden.

Even if I focused on these four most famous places on the island, which blend Nature and History, this is only a small part of what you can discover on the island, which boasts more than 100 beaches!! That could be the topics for our next post!

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
