1 β The Face β Le Visage in French
- le front β forehead
- le nez β nose. Z is silent but makes the e sound Γ©. In the plural, there is no s β un nez, des nez.
- la joue β cheek
- le menton β chin
- une oreille β ear
Le visage is located on βla tΓͺteβ. The face is located on the head.
On top of βla tΓͺteβ is a special kind of hair: this hair in French is called βles cheveuxβ.
A single piece of hair would be βun cheveuβ in the singular, but in French, when we refer to the ensemble of the hair, as in when you comb your hair, or style your hair, we use βcheveuxβ in the plural.
2 β Pronunciation of Eye in French
- Un oeil β one eye β has a strong liaison in N.
- Les yeux β In the plural, you will almost always have a Z sound starting the word βz-yeuxβ because of the word which comes before it, and the liaison, so you may as well memorize the sound βzieuβ for it.
- La paupiΓ¨re β the eye lid
- Un cil β an eye lash β L pronounced
- le sourcil β eyebrow (L silent)
And then, another strange word : βun cilβ, des βcilsβ, this time with the final L pronounced : the eye-lashes.

A new approach to learning both traditional and modern French logically structured for English speakers.
