French Expressions Used by President Macron

Author: Chantal

In this French English article, I’ll list a couple of expressions used by President Macron, and explain them.

France’s President Macron uses very strange expressions in his speeches. For a relatively young man, his mastery of French is impressive, but somewhat old-fashioned at times.

1 – Une Femme DĂ©licieuse

Le PrĂ©sident de France, Monsieur Macron a figurĂ© dans les journaux derniĂšrement pour avoir qualifiĂ©e la femme du premier ministre australien de “dĂ©licieuse”. Cette semaine, j’avais un Ă©tudiant de français en immersion chez moi, et je lui ai expliquĂ© ce que Monsieur Macron voulait dire.

France’s President Macron has been in the news lately for describing Australia Prime Minister’s wife of “delicious”. That week, I had a French immersion student at my house and I explained to him what Mister Macron meant.

“DĂ©licieux” (dĂ©licieuse au fĂ©minine) en français est principalement utilisĂ© pour dĂ©crire la nourriture. Cependant, cela veut aussi dire “charmant”, mĂȘme si c’est une utilisation un peu vieillotte du mot. C’est bien sĂ»r ce que Monsieur Macron voulait dire. Je ne serais pas surprise s’il l’avait fait exprĂšs cependant !

“DĂ©licieux (feminine dĂ©licieuse)” in French mostly means delicious and is used to talk about food. However, it also means “delightful” even though it’s a somewhat outdated use of the word. That’s of course what President Macron meant. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did it on purpose though!

2 – Vitesse Grand V

Emmanuel Macron est le plus jeune PrĂ©sident de France et cela explique peut-ĂȘtre son dynamisme. Il veut rĂ©former le pays Ă  « vitesse grand V Â». Cette expression veut dire qu’il veut aller trĂšs vite.

Emmanuel Macron is the youngest president of France and that possibly explains his dynamism. He wants to reform the country “vitesse grand V” [lit: “Speed capital S”]. This expression means that he wants to go very fast.

Mais je ne vais pas vous parler des changements qu’il met en place. C’est le « personnage Macron Â» qui m’intĂ©resse !

But I am not going to tell you about the changes he is setting up. It’s the “Macron Figure” that interests me!

Cet homme est trĂšs particulier. Il utilise des mots d’un registre de français ancien que les Français n’emploient plus : je pense que c’est parce qu’il lit beaucoup de littĂ©rature classique. Ce sont des mots dĂ©suets qui sont devenus rares. Ils Ă©taient trĂšs courants il y a cent ans, et c’est trĂšs bizarre de les entendre dans la bouche d’un homme de 40 ans !

This man is unique. He uses words from an older French register that the French don’t use anymore: I think it’s because he reads a lot of classical literature. Those are rare and outdated words. They were frequently used 100 years ago, and it’s very strange to hear them in the mouth of a 40 years old man.

3 – Croquignolesque

Pendant sa premiĂšre interview tĂ©lĂ©visĂ©e, il parlait de monde « croquignolesque Â» qui veut dire ridicule, risible, une expression qui date du dĂ©but du 20Ăšme siĂšcle.

During his first interview, he talked about a “croquignolesque” world which means ridiculous, laughable, an expression from the beginning of the twentieth century.

4 – La Poudre de Perlimpinpin

Il utilisait aussi le terme de « poudre de Perlimpinpin Â» qui veut dire que c’est inefficace (un mĂ©dicament sans rĂ©sultats).

Also he used the terme of “ poudre de perlimpinpin” which means that it is ineffective (a medicine without results – a placebo).

But my favorite is the one he used one day at the 1 PM newscast; besides, that’s new too! Every other president expresses themselves in the evening news but this time, he chose to speak in Jean-Pierre Pernaut ‘s newscast. Is it because this journalist is just like him and me from Picardie??? Why not!

Bref, mon “expression Macron” prĂ©fĂ©rĂ©e est: « carabistouille Â». En effet c’est une expression qui vient du Nord de la France (de ma rĂ©gion, donc) et qui veut dire « mensonge, bĂȘtise Â». J’adore la consonnance de ce mot ! J’adore tous les mots en « ouille Â» comme : Grenouille, fripouille, gargouille et ratatouille !

So, my favorite Macron’s expression is “carabistouille”. Indeed, this is an expression from the North of France (from my region, thus) which means “lie, stupidity”. I very much like the sound of this word! I like all the words that end with “ouille” like: grenouille (frog), fripouille (scoundrel), gargoyle, and ratatouille! (you’ll find how to pronounce the “ouille” words in French Today’s Audiobook Secret of French Pronunciation)

Macron n’est vraiment pas comme les autres prĂ©sidents et je veux lui dire « MERCI Â» de remettre Ă  la mode la si jolie langue de MoliĂšre ! Mais c’est aussi Brigitte, sa femme, que je remercie. Elle a Ă©tĂ© sa professeure de Français avant de devenir sa femme et je pense qu’elle a largement contribuĂ© Ă  faire de lui l’homme qu’il est.

Macron is really not like all the other presidents and I want to thank him for making fashionable again the so lovely Language of MoliĂšre. Also, I thank Brigitte, his wife. She was his teacher before she became his wife and I think she contributed, to a large part, to create the man he is.

J’attends avec impatience la prochaine interview.

I am looking forward to the next interview.

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
