1 – Le Gaspacho

I would like to share with you my recipe for gazpacho. No, it’s not a Breton recipe, nor a French one in fact
But it’s one of my favorite recipes for the summer, because almost all the ingredients come from our garden.

Tout d’abord, le gaspacho
 n’est pas chaud ! C’est une soupe froide !

First, the gazpacho is not hot (pun in French)! It’s a cold soup!

When I host my French immersion student in my home, I enjoy preparing this recipe together. We choose and pick the vegetables in my vegetable garden: this is a good way to learn new French vocabulary words. And then we speak French together as we cook this simple gazpacho recipe.

2 – There is not one unique gazpacho recipe

It was a group of Spanish ladies in our B&B who gave me the recipe about a decade ago. It was a very animated moment when they dictated the ingredients and the method, since as they explained, everyone has their own recipe, and they did not all agree with each other. There are almost as many variations as there are people who prepare it!

3 – Ingredients for the gazpacho

  8. ‹un poivron vert, un poivron rouge
  9. du sel
  10. et quelques graines de cumin

I like recipes with rather imprecise quantities. It shows us that we can adapt the ingredients according to what we have at hand.

‹So, our friends from Valencia gave me the following list: several tomatoes, a small amount of onion, stale bread soaked in water, a few pieces of cucumber, a clove of garlic, Ÿ glass of olive oil (or less), a tablespoon of red wine vinegar, a green pepper, a red pepper, salt and some cumin seeds.

You need a blender to make a smooth gazpacho. I prepare the vegetables and I find the other ingredients in the cupboards. I peel the onion, garlic and cucumber but not the tomatoes. I deseed and trim the peppers.

I think the order in which you put the ingredients in the blender is not very important. I have adopted a technique that works very well for me. First I put the cumin seeds, the pieces of onion and garlic, the bread, a little olive oil and vinegar, and I mix a little. That way I can be sure that these ingredients will be very well mixed. And then, as for the other stages of the recipe, I take a picture to illustrate this article.

Incidentally, this time, my husband Peter arrives and wants to know what I’m doing. He looks in the blender. “Yuck! He says, “That’s not very appetizing! He’s right, the color is bland, but at least I’m sure these first ingredients are well mixed.

Then I gradually add the other ingredients: cucumber, peppers, tomatoes, more olive oil and a little more vinegar. I keep mixing.‹I taste it, I add salt, (and black pepper: something that the ladies did not mention) and I taste it again.

5 – Storing and serving the Gazpacho

I put the gazpacho in one or two sterilized bottles, then in the refrigerator. It can be stored for up to 4 days in the fridge.

Peter likes serving gazpacho in shot glasses, and it’s true that they’re elegant
but I prefer to serve it in water glasses. The shot glasses are too small!

Go on, try it yourself before the end of the summer. Enjoy!

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
