Comment est-ce que j’ai entendu parler des jardins suspendus de Marqueyssac ? Je ne saurais vous le dire… Je crois que j’ai vu une photo un jour dans un magazine. Mais ce dont je me rappelle, c’est que je me suis dit qu’un jour, j’irai.

How did I hear about Marqueyssac hanging gardens? I couldn’t tell you … I think I saw a photo one day in a magazine. But what I remember is that I said to myself that one day I will go there.

Eh bien ce jour est arrivé. Et ça m’a tellement plu que depuis, j’y suis retournée. La première fois, c’était en 2014, la deuxième, six ans après, en 2020. Le plaisir de se promener dans ce jardin fabuleux n’a pas diminué.

Well that day did arrive. And I liked it so much that since then I have been back. The first time was in 2014, the second, six years later, in 2020. The pleasure of walking in this fabulous garden has not diminished.

Un Parc de 22 hectacres

Perché sur un éperon rocheux, le parc de Marqueyssac fait 22 hectares. Tout au bout du parc se trouve “Le Belvédère de la Dordogne”. Depuis ce point de vue imprenable, on peut voir les châteaux avoisinants : Beynac, Fayrac, Castelnaud, La Roque-Gageac et Domme…

Ce n’est qu’en mars 1997 que Marqueyssac a ouvert ses portes au public, mais c’est aujourd’hui le jardin le plus visité du Périgord.

Un très joli manoir

Lorsqu’on arrive depuis la vallée à Marqueyssac, on voit d’abord le château. Enfin, un château… comparé aux énormes châteaux-forts du Périgord, on dirait plutôt un manoir. Un très joli manoir, un de ceux dont on se dit “tiens, j’habiterais bien ici”. Pierres jaunes, portes et volets lilas, et surtout les vieilles lauzes qui recouvrent la toiture donnent à l’édifice un air chaleureux et accueillant. C’est grand, bien sûr, mais pas si grand que ça…

When you arrive from the valley in Marqueyssac, you first see the castle. Well, a castle … compared to the huge castles of the Périgord, it looks more like a manor. A very pretty mansion, one of those where you say to yourself “hey, I could live here”. Yellow stones, lilac doors and windows, and above all the antique slate which covers the roof give the building a warm and welcoming air. It’s big, of course, but not that big …

Les portes étaient ouvertes, alors je suis rentrée… Un peu timidement, comme si je m’aventurais dans la maison de quelqu’un. Deux très jolies pièces, et en bas, une expo. C’est joli, certes, mais ça ne casse pas trois pattes à un canard.

The doors were open, so I walked in … A little timidly, as if I was venturing into someone’s house. Two very pretty rooms, and downstairs, an exhibition. It’s pretty, certainly, but it’s nothing extremely special (idiom: lit: it doesn’t break three legs of a duck).

Des paons en liberté

En revanche, quand le paon vient faire la roue devant le salon, là, ça devient exceptionnel. Car à Marqueyssac, voyez-vous, les paons se promènent en liberté. Si vous allez boire un café et/ou manger une glace dans le salon de thé d’extérieur, ils viendront manger dans votre main.

Des Jardins… sublimissimes !

Vous avez peut-être remarqué que jusqu’à présent, je tourne un peu autour du pot… J’ai fait la visite à l’envers, pour aller de ce qu’il y a de moins marquant au plus sublime. Pourquoi ? Parce que le plus sublime est… sublimissime ! Et je ne sais pas vraiment comment je vais m’y prendre pour vous le décrire.

Imaginez… une mer verte, avec des vagues plus ou moins hautes. On a envie d’y plonger, et on se demande quelle sorte de poissons multicolores et féériques on va pouvoir y découvrir. En guise de poisson, des plumes multicolores de paon !

Imagine … a green sea, with more or less high waves. You want to dive in there, and you wonder what kind of multicolored and magical fish you’ll be able to discover there. Instead of fish, multicolored peacock feathers!

Le jardin de buis taillé de Marqueyssac est tout simplement magique. Les photos rendent bien la qualité du lieu. Mais rien ne peut remplacer l’émotion que l’on ressent quand on y est. C’est un peu comme un jardin zen… C’est extrêmement bien fait, bien dessiné, bien entretenu… On est conscient du travail engagé… Et pourtant cela paraît simple, presque naturel.

Marqueyssac’s pruned boxwood garden is simply magical. The photos reflect the quality of the place. But nothing can replace the emotion that you feel when you are there. It’s a bit like a Zen garden … It’s extremely well done, well designed, well maintained … You are aware of the work involved … And yet it seems simple, almost natural.

Un grand parc sauvage

Lorsqu’on sort du jardin de buis, on entre dans un grand parc où la nature est plus sauvage : des buis bien sûr, mais aussi des tilleuls, arbres de Judée, cytises, platanes et ormes, cyprès, pins parasols et cyclamens de Naples… On se perd dans les allées sinueuses, les petits escaliers… On admire les cabanes en pierre sèche, les rocailles, les fontaines… On s’assied un moment sur l’un des bancs taillés dans le rocher.

When you leave the boxwood garden, you enter a large park where nature is wilder: boxwood of course, but also lime trees, Judas trees, laburnum, plane trees and elms, cypresses, umbrella pines and Naples cyclamen. … You get lost in the winding alleys, the small staircases … You admire the dry stone huts, the rockeries, the fountains … You sit down for a moment on one of the benches carved into the rock.

Il faut dire que ça grimpe un peu pour atteindre le Belvédère, point culminant du parc de Marqeyssac. Il se situe de l’autre côté du parc, à 800 mètres du château. Véritable “balcon” sur la rivière Dordogne, on surplombe à 192 mètres d’altitude l’ensemble de la vallée. C’est stupéfiant.

I must admit it’s quite a hike to reach the Belvédère, the highest point of the Marqeyssac park. It is located on the other side of the park, 800 meters from the castle. A true “balcony” over the Dordogne river, you overlook, at 192 meters high, the entire valley. It’s stunning.

Si vous allez en Dordogne, ce serait vraiment dommage de passer à côté de Marqueyssac sans vous y arrêter. Et quand vous serez en apnée dans les vagues de buis… pensez à moi !

If you go to the Dordogne, it would be a shame to pass by Marqueyssac without stopping there. And when you are snorkeling in the boxwood waves … think of me!
