I realized a short time ago that proper, written French is much different from street French when a friend of mine said, “J’ai pas compris.” (Je n’ai pas compris.) I was most interested in the modern French portion of your lessons which has proven to be very useful in helping me understand what I hear spoken by native speakers.

I have tried to learn some French in so many ways: some free some very expensive. Maybe I was just unlucky, but the worst and most expensive were one-on-one courses with ex-school teachers giving private lessons. I felt I was being groomed (usually in English) to pass a written (French) exam – lots of grammar to show me how much the expert teachers knew about his/her subject but little French conversation. The French Today language course is the opposite – it encourages you to firstly open your ears and listen and ‘get’ the meaning; then to open your mouth and speak. Listen – speak – question – repeat. Listen – speak – question – repeat. It works. Initially, I did tend to miss out on the ‘speak’ bit believing that ”thinking” the words in my head would suffice but it doesn’t. One cannot learn to play the piano by just looking at the notes and the keys – you have to establish some automatic connections between your brain and your finger muscles. Similarly, to speak strange words, you have to connect your brain to your mouth and tongue muscles. Eventually, the words and phrases become automatic. Yes, there are sections on grammar and vocabulary but it is only what is needed as you progress. It is a very natural way to learn French and I’m now moving onto the Intermediate levels.

I have loads of french language books but where french today is different is that you get to hear the language spoken and can practice speaking it. I found it very easy to learn. I also purchased the verb drills and listen to them while walking the dog, it’s an excellent way to learn.

Making my way through the audiobook series, and piecing together all the things that were never properly explained to me until now. I appreciate the spacious look of the series which helps concepts become clearer. It’s going to take a while before I have real confidence in my French, but I’m happy to make steady progress. Hoping to sit a TEF exam and pass in 9 months!

Writing about French Today isn’t easy. There is so much I could say and it is all very, very positive. As a beginner last November, I’ve invested in the audio books and I’d recommend them to anyone wishing to learn French. For me it has made learning a language a complete joy. A fantastic method with great attention to detail and especially good on the spoken side (which I find most difficult). Camille and Olivier put their heart and soul into it and it shows. But that’s not the end of it. With the French Today website and its blogs and videos, plus regular emails with French language tips and links, it must be the friendliest, the most effective and best value foreign language learning course ever.

I really enjoy this way of studying French! And learning about the Modern French way of speaking is a real revolution for me. The dialogues are entertaining and I’m learning new ways to express common phrases. I’ve order 3 different levels so I can progress when I’m ready. Recommended highly!

This series fills the void between written and spoken French. This intermediate level is the nuts and bolts I’ve been looking for.

Thank you for the attention to detail and the honest intention that the student gets it. I feel you both have no other agenda except provide an excellent product. merci beaucoup, C J Cox

For too long, I’ve put off tooting a horn about this amazing French language program. Why? I just didn’t know where to start. Its “superlatives” are mind-boggling-and I say this as a retired high school English teacher-new French language learner, who has tried the entire Pimsleur and other French programs on the web, as well as studied French at the Alliance Francaise for weeks at a time in Paris. But toot, I will, beginning with the outstanding and comprehensive components of French Today’s main program, Levels 1-8:

First, the story. Here, you discover interesting characters, male and female, who meet in college, but later lead separate lives, dealing with careers, children and families, in real-world situations, such as traveling, shopping, eating at restaurants. Sounds similar to other programs? Yes, but French Today(FT) stories go deeper. For example, when you travel with FT, you don’t just arrive at a new place, meet a few people, and go home. FT takes you to the airport, gets you on and off the plane, makes you deal with losing your luggage and getting the wrong room at the hotel. Be assured you discover new sites and have adventures, but you also deal with tickets, transportation, and cultural do’s and don’ts along the way, just as you would in real life. Seasoned travelers, Camille and Olivier have thoughtfully included the situations they know we will face and the language they know we will need!

The engaging content, which teaches us how to communicate at parties, restaurants, markets, stores, hotels, parks, beaches, on buses, taxis, and trains– also includes children, parents, and grandparents-even babies. Thus, we are exposed to various registers of language– the formal, informal, slang, and many idiomatic aspects of language rarely covered in standard French language courses.

Learners can also listen to the story entirely recorded at two speeds: one slower and carefully enunciated; the other, spoken at street-speed, full of elisions. In addition to the adjustable speed for the audio, a student can read the text of the story, observing the spelling and/or catching words that he might have failed to hear. Beyond that, there is even an English translation just below the French text, which can be grayed out, depending on one’s preference.

But there’s even more! Following the stories, up to 25 stories per level (8 Levels total), “Study Guides” provide clear and succinct grammatical explanations for newly introduced grammar in the stories. The levels begin teaching the basics of the language and increasingly advance throughout, with “even” levels reinforcing the lessons taught in the “uneven” levels. Using the grammatical structures and vocabulary introduced in the story, question and answer components provide time for students to answer and answers provide reassurance. Then, as you advance up the levels, so does your French. Those of you who are struggling to memorize grammar as you work your way through a text, there’s an easier, more memorable way-French Today.

Beyond the content of French Today, the technical design of the program also includes many superior components: The text can be enlarged, helpful while running on a treadmill. You can show or hide the translation, pause at the chapter end, skip around the chapters, while aligning the text with a tap on an icon. Navigation keys allow you to go forward or backward 15 minutes or fast forward or backward. Clear text tells you the name of the chapter you are listening to and even how many minutes of the total number of minutes you are “Now Playing.” I can’t think of any other feature I would want in this easy-to-navigate, oh, so thoughtful program that’s downloadable on your mobile device, so you don’t even need Wi-Fi to access it.

There’s still much more to say about the other components of French Today-Verb drills, Classic French Tales, Essential French Dialogs, French Greetings + Politeness, French Verbs Fundamentals, Mastering French Adjectives, Secrets of French Conversation, Secrets of French Pronunciation, and more. Then there are the regular mini-lessons that Camille provides in her frequent emailed announcements that I haven’t even begun to tackle. Just like the French language, French Today is limitless and extraordinarily full of exciting lessons. Don’t wait any longer to try it!

I’ve used a number of French language products and this is THE BEST.

The entire series is superbly crafted as chapters of a novel that teach you how to speak authentic contemporary French. You can listen at a slower pace to be able to understand the story and then practice using “street French”.

The user interface is very easy to use and there is an app to keep all your content together.

Additionally Camille posts a lot of free grammar lessons and stories to motivate and teach you about life in Brittany.
