You might enjoy visiting the local market with me and chatting with vendors. Cooking together is also a fun way to practice French.

My friends are excited to meet my immersion guests, and most of them don't speak English, providing you with ample opportunities to practice French. They have a variety of interests including golf, history, fishing, cooking, theater, art... Let me know your preferences, and I'll invite the right person to enrich your French studycation.

I also have a friendly, hypoallergenic Havanese bichon puppy named Vinky. He's a great listener and will never critizise your French!

Last year I did a French immersion with Camille in Paimpol, and it was a great success in terms of improving my spoken French. It gave me much more confidence speaking and was such a positive experience that I decided to join Camille again, this time for a week of immersion in Alcalá, Tenerife.

Although it might seem unusual at first to do a French immersion in a Spanish-speaking country, in practice it worked perfectly. I spoke French all the time with Camille and her partner Jean-Loup, and the immersion felt completely natural. One of the highlights for me was spending time talking with Jean-Loup. Because he doesn’t speak English and isn’t a French teacher, our conversations felt very real and authentic, which was incredibly helpful for improving my spoken French.

Camille had rented a simple but comfortable apartment for me right next to hers, which made everything very convenient. We could easily have French lessons in my apartment, then go to her apartment for dinner, or spend time chatting together. The arrangement worked really well and made the whole experience feel relaxed and natural.

Alcalá itself is a beautiful part of Tenerife. Unlike many places on the island, it hasn’t been ruined by tourism and still retains its original charm. It was a lovely place to spend a week, peaceful, authentic, and full of character.

Camille was also very flexible with the programme, adapting the lessons and activities to my interests and level. The atmosphere was relaxed but very productive.

Another bonus for me is that I’m an amateur photographer, and Alcalá and the surrounding area offered plenty of great opportunities for photography, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Checkout my photos from Alcala here: https://www.instagram.com/paulbyrnephotography/

And finally, I should mention that Camille is an excellent cook! Sharing meals together was a wonderful part of the immersion and created lots of opportunities for relaxed conversation in French.

Overall, I had a fantastic experience. It was a week of real French immersion, meaningful conversations, and enjoyable learning, all in a beautiful and sunny setting. I am now looking at my diary to plan my third immersion with Camille!

Mindy (in Tenerife)

Greetings from TENERIFE where I have just finished  a two week immersion with Camille.  I am an artist and wanted to give my French a jump start after being an “advanced beginner” for beaucoup d’années.  Mission definitely accomplished.

Why go to France in the winter when you could be having a warm study-cation in sunny Tenerife?
Though it may seem unintuitive to you, it was not to me. I thought it sounded like a great idea.  It has turned out to be an excellent choice and it really did live up to my expectations.  We met daily for two hours of study in the morning from Camille’s À Moi Paris course, we ate lunch together; the afternoon was free, and we regrouped in the early evening for a walk and a picnic dinner while watching the sunset, or dining out (all meals provided by Camille).   Breakfast was on my own with a well stocked, by Camille, refrigerator.

As I managed to fracture my foot before leaving the US, I really used my time to focus on my French and doing way less drawing than I usually do while traveling.  We did do a few field trips, all having minimal walking.  My favorite was watching the kite surfers in El Medano.

The evenings and field trips included her friend Jean-Loup and adorable dog Vicky.  Jean-Loup speaks very little English so an excellent opportunity to continue speaking in French when he joined us.

Camille is very adaptable and not at all rigid.   As the time passed I was able to not resort to English as much.  Non, I am not fluent (c’mon, it was only to weeks), but am more confident, my foundation way stronger, and am enthused to try keeping up with the program when I return home. It was too bad that I was not as mobile as I would have liked to have been as there are many nice walks. I did love being somewhere I have not been before.

My little apartment was great with a great view of the water from the balcony.   The town is small, very quiet, and easy to relax in.  I could go on, but in summary, this was the perfect get away and study-cation.

Anne

To say that my week with Camille exceeded my expectations on all counts would be a gross understatement. Where do I begin?

It was Camille’s smile that somewhat bewitched me and piqued my interest in an immersion stay when I first ran across her Facebook page. Every week she lured me in with new photos of seemingly delighted students. Her home. Historical and gorgeous sights around Bretagne. The coast. A multitude of French tour guides and friends. Vinky. Food, glorious food. It was too much. I had to sign up.

Accommodations

From my very first step into Camille’s charming home, I felt welcomed and comfortable. Her home is spacious, immaculately clean, and filled with light. My bedroom was quite large, with a work desk area and ample storage. I unpacked and moved in as if it were my own.

That first night, when I dropped into bed, I was immediately soothed by a sumptuous mattress and an abundance of pillows and cozy linens. Through a window in the slanted roof, the starry night sky further enchanted me, then lulled me to sleep.

I had my own private and very large bathroom with a lounge worthy deep tub where I relaxed almost every evening. Fluffy towels were plentiful, and I was pleased to find organic options in Camille’s selection of soaps, lotions, and other bathroom toiletries.

The details don’t stop there. Camille was careful to stock her kitchen with the foods and drinks that met my breakfast needs. My morning routines are vital. She prepared fresh, delectable meals every day, and I was truly pampered. We shared lively and interesting stories at the table or in the living room warmed by a sparkling fireplace. It was easy to like Camille. She absolutely knocked it out of the park.

Lessons

I think the operative phrase for Camille’s lessons is “individually tailored.” Our class time was structured around me. Specifically me. The French that I was speaking and the French that I might speak.

Camille quickly identified my learning style and how to best meet the objectives that we outlined together. Improvements happened immediately and I made progress daily. She kept thorough and precise notes for me and effectively encouraged me to speak only French.

Nobody was more surprised, or more delighted, than I was to discover that I could speak French so well. Camille pushed me. I welcomed the challenge, and my confidence, a crucial component of speaking a foreign language, grew. This was the principal goal for my immersion stay and I was completely satisfied. She found the conversational French in me and she helped me get it out. Ten out of ten.

Tours, Excursions, and Other Activities

A private tour was arranged for me with the fabulous and informative Ana. What a great idea, to send me off on my own to speak French with someone new. With Ana’s individual speaking style, pitch, vocabulary, and conversational speed, I was immediately challenged and exposed to more French.

I had a very enjoyable day that included an interesting maritime museum, a fish breeding pond, and the cathedral of Saint Ives, all on a breezy day in the Paimpol area, topped off with a stop for an espresso and more French, French, French.

Perhaps the crowning jewel of my immersion trip was a two day excursion to Saint Malo, Mont Saint Michel, and Dinan. Was it the sing alongs in the car, the lesson about mistletoe, night play in a cemetery? Could it have been the exquisite meals, the sights, or the history?

The invigorating walks through important medieval towns, over cobblestone alleyways, and up, up, up the ancient steps of the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel? I can’t really say.

What I can tell you is that Camille and her friend Jean Loup were tour guides, docents, and history lecturers of top shelf variety. The thoughtfulness and attentiveness that they showed toward me was outstanding. Their unique touch transported me into new worlds. If I sound a bit dramatic, it’s simply that in their company, this trip perfectly checked off a long anticipated journey to Saint Malo. That Mont Saint Michel blew my mind. And that I was emotionally and intellectually sated.

One evening, Camille and Jean Loup invited me to attend a play at the local adult community theatre. Jean Loup was performing, and Camille whipped up a beautiful and delicious appetizer feast for all the actors backstage. What a treat to experience Paimpol like a local. Fair to admit that Camille gave me a synopsis of the play beforehand, without which I’d likely have missed at least half of the delightful production.

The days were filled with activity, and I was grateful for Camille’s enthusiasm and the discipline with which she kept me on task. Even on day one, after two long days of traveling, there was a sturdy walk in the brisk air along the coast in Paimpol. With views out to wind turbines in the sea and peaks over the walls of the Abbey at Beaufort, it was absolutely breathtaking and fun.

Of course, this walk, and another along a more violent and rocky coastal region, were all the more enjoyable in the company of the friendly and mischievous Vinky, pup extraordinaire.

Friendship

This is indeed an unexpected category for my review, but likely the most valuable.

Though Paimpol, and perhaps the whole of Bretagne, are enchanting, make no mistake, this program for me was about Camille and the truly lovely people with whom she surrounds herself, whom she shared with me for a memorable week that passed too quickly.

The most surprising gift of this adventure was to bid a heartfelt “so long” not just to my talented teacher and hostess, but to someone whom I now call friend, and whose smile I hope to see again one day.

Merci,

Alexa

In the week I spent with Camille, I think it not untrue to say that I have learned more French than in the previous 8 years that I have spent living in France. Camille’s method asks and answers everyday situations and prepares one  for real life.

In addition to personalized learning, I’ve had great, beautifully presented, delicious food, the company of some super individuals with whom to practice and the most amazing landscape in which to do it all.
Most importantly is my increased confidence to speak, if not perfectly; and that was and remains my aim, and one in which Camille has exceeded my expectations.
Morella and Steve

Camille, we had the most wonderful week with you. Thank you so much for everything. Morella and I were both nervous for the week because our French isn’t the best. But from the moment you greeted us at the train station, we felt like we had a friend for life.

Your home is beautiful, warm and inviting. It was nice having own private area to ourselves. Our room was very large and comfortable, and with the skylight, Morella could look up from her side of the bed and see the stars at night. The bathroom was surprisingly large. And using your washer and dryer really came in handy.

Vinky is such an incredible dog. He’s so sweet and never barked once. And so smart — he is the only dog I know of who rings a bell when he is ready to go out.

And the meals… oh my gosh. Each was better than the last. When you put out a spread it looked so beautiful that I didn’t want to touch it. But once I did, I discovered it tasted better than it looked.

I especially appreciated that you tailored our lessons just for us. You spent a little time getting to know us up front and where we are with our French, then worked with us from our level. You stretched us at times, but never too much. And you had a good sense as to when to let us rest.

But the classroom time was only a part of the experience. The true value came from you and Jean-Loup (whom we adored) talking to us only in French and our having to respond. You and he were so patient and helpful and fortunately neither of you seemed to mind when we couldn’t come up with the right thing to say in French.

And of course the side trip to Mont Saint-Michel was just off the charts. What a special place that is.

We are definitely richer for the experience.

Chris

I’ve just returned home from my delightful immersion stay with Camille, and am now enjoying many good memories of my week in her home. I had planned this trip for a long time, but almost canceled it because I had broken my arm in the spring, which really slowed me down both physically and mentally. All my plans for finishing Level1 of her audiobook À Moi Paris had fallen by the wayside, and my strength and stamina were definitely not back to normal.

Camille not only accepted this, she adapted the schedule to meet my capabilities. I ended the week rested and quite a bit stronger than when I arrived, which was unexpected and quite a bonus. I am so very glad I did not cancel!

She also adjusted the lessons to match this reality. My French studies were many many years ago and not focused on speaking — one semester was spent translating Stendhal’s Rouge et Noir, clearly not helpful for any conversation! I had a sense of grammar and pronunciation, but not an ear for understanding what was being said. She taught me how to listen, listen, listen — and not read along with the conversations (which I hadn’t consciously realized I was doing). She also taught the importance of focusing on who I was conversing with and not just what I was trying to say, which of course is vital in any language!

My arrival was not what I expected — I could NOT open the door to get off the train in Guingamp, so couldn’t transfer to the Paimpol train. I got off at the next station, and called Camille in a panic. I gave my phone to the ticket agent, and they agreed that the best plan was for me to go back to Guingamp and she would pick me up there. I got off the train and saw her coming from the parking lot. She greeted me with a big smile and a warm hug, an auspicious beginning to our week together.

Her warmth and openness made me feel really welcome. Her home is lovely, my bedroom and bath spacious, private, and very comfortable — a true home away from home. She’s an excellent teacher — and as good a cook! Our meals were varied, delicious and beautiful to look at. Paimpol is a charming town, with a large market offering fresh food and specialty meats, an attractive beach, pretty walking paths and intriguing architecture old and new.

I really enjoyed both tours she set up for me — to the cathedral in Treguier with Ana, and to Le Château de la Roche Jagu with Zoe. Both women were knowledgeable about these sites. but even better, were friendly and open companions during our time together. I did one extra — an hour massage with Jaci — and highly recommend that as well.

All this was truly wonderful, but my best take-away from this trip is the warmth shown to me by everyone I met. I felt welcome from beginning to end, and am so glad for the opportunity to meet Camille and her friends.

Norman and Emma

My French immersion homestay with Camille was exactly what I needed. Emma and I spent a week in Paimpol enjoying the harbor, market day, coastal drives, Breton specialties, and lively conversation with Camille and her friends—while I finally unlocked my spoken French.

I’ve studied French on and off for years (high school, graduate school, Alliance Française, private lessons) and, more recently, built strong listening skills with French Today—but I hadn’t really spoken for almost 50 years. In our first lesson, Camille zeroed in on what was holding me back: I tended to “speak like I write”—head down, searching for perfect words. Her fix was concrete and kind: look up, make eye contact, smile, and speak more spontaneously. After just two lessons, I felt the shift.

Lessons were only part of the immersion. Throughout the day—at the market, over meals, and during drives—I kept speaking; Camille jotted down useful words and expressions and texted them each evening, often with links to relevant French Today posts. Review was easy, and learning stayed continuous.

Equally valuable were the real-world conversations. Camille arranged three-hour outings with Zoé, Annick, and Amandine—each offering new topics, different rhythms, and sustained practice. She also introduced me to her friends: two convivial dinners with Jean-Loup and breakfast-and-lunch conversations with Jean-Marc. Those encounters—varied voices, new settings—confirmed that I can now converse with many different speakers, not just my teacher.

Camille gave me a simple routine to “activate” my passive French using short French Today audio articles: listen once and explain in my own words; listen again in segments to add detail; read the transcript aloud with expression; then explain again. We tried it together, and later I presented an article on the Académie Française—clear proof the method works and a roadmap I can keep using at home.

Emma wasn’t studying, yet she loved the week. Camille included her warmly outside lesson time—market visits, cafés, scenic walks, relaxed dinners in English and French—and even invited her into the kitchen to cook one of Emma’s Filipino specialties. She felt welcomed, never sidelined, and had plenty of time to read or watch a show while I had my lessons.

As others mentioned, Camille’s dog Vinky is a joy—gentle, friendly, and an easy companion on coastal walks. He’s a small Havanese bichon (hypoallergenic, doesn’t shed, and barks very little), so even people like us who aren’t “dog people” enjoy his company so much.

Our private suite (bedroom; bath with tub and separate shower; separate toilet; and a small office where I could study) made everything comfortable and quiet. For serious progress in French—and a memorable Brittany experience for a non-studying partner—this is ideal.

Jeff

My immensely enjoyable five-day immersion homestay with Camille Chevalier improved my French, especially my pronunciation. More important than that, Camille’s teaching method transformed how I will further improve my French now that I am back home. We used her audio À Moi Paris lessons, coupled with daily personal instruction and language usage throughout the day. That laid the foundation for much more efficient and effective learning. Camille is flexible regarding your learning preferences. When I expressed a preference, she accommodated that preference. And it’s so pleasurable! Camille speaks English, so you’re not “locked into” French – especially important at my beginner level.

The environment is especially welcoming; her cozy, spotless home in Paimpol is a short walk to the town center and its market and café-lined harbor. Her gentle little dog does not shed. I am allergic to dog hair (I love dogs) and I had no trouble at all. We ate (and drank) well; our meals included fresh items from the Tuesday open market, as well as Paimpol’s superb shops. Included in my stay were two delightful tours of the area with expert bilingual guides–Paimpol and the Brittany coast are historic and beautiful.

In five days with Camille, I learned as much as I had in a year or more of isolated home study. In some very important ways, I learned far more! My enthusiasm for developing greater ability has consequently been enhanced. My homestay immersion was a wise investment that I urge other French learners to consider!

Amos

My name is Amos. I live in Shanghai, where I work as a Communications Director in fashion. I frequently travel to Paris and have a French partner, so French has always been a part of my life in some way.

French Immersion came to me as an unexpected gift. My boss had originally booked the program but couldn’t make it at the last minute, so she asked me to fly all the way from China to take her place.

I must admit, I never imagined the program would be so enriching, inspiring, and yet so relaxing at the same time.

I’ve always considered my French to be “passive.” Over the years, I’ve taken French courses in colleges across the U.S., London, and Paris, and thanks to my French partner and frequent trips to France, I can understand about probably 80% of daily conversations. But speaking? That’s another story. I’m someone who cannot accept my mistakes, so I’ve never trusted myself to speak French, until now.

Soon after arriving at Camille’s charming home, she immediately pinpointed my biggest hurdle: confidence. Through her warm and encouraging approach, she created a carefree environment where I felt comfortable speaking—not just with her, but also with her brilliant partner Jean Loup and their wonderfully diverse circle of friends. And let’s not forget Vinky, their adorable “panda-like” Bichon, who quickly became a dear companion.

Camille’s teaching style worked perfectly for me. She helped me rediscover those small yet crucial words and phrases that had been missing from my vocabulary, allowing me to communicate more smoothly. Gradually, I grew more confident, answering questions, asking my own, and even initiating conversations.

What truly impressed me was that Camille didn’t just focus on teaching me during my stay; she equipped me with a personalized self-study method to ensure I could keep improving my French with her French audiobooks even after returning to my life in Shanghai.

Beyond the language lessons, living with Camille was an absolute pleasure. Her cooking? Absolutely divine. Every meal was a masterpiece, simple yet bursting with flavor, made with the freshest ingredients and presented beautifully (yes, Instagram-worthy indeed!). As someone who loves food, I was in heaven. Now, thinking about going back to Shanghai, I’m sure I will find myself craving those dishes and even feeling inspired to cook healthier meals myself!

My private living space, complete with a bedroom, a study, a spacious bathroom and a toilet room, was cozy and comfortable, offering both privacy and homely warmth. The weather was perfect, and I especially loved our afternoon walks along the coast, quick dips in the sea, and the picnics. The guided excursions to nearby towns and local festivals were eye-opening, deepening my appreciation for the region’s rich history. Anne and Zoé, my guides, were incredibly knowledgeable about the culture and traditions. And of course, I had the best galette and crêpe of my life, unforgettable!

As I write this on the train back to Paris, I realize this experience was more than just a language immersion. It was a journey of personal growth, life reset, cultural discovery, and most importantly, the beginning of lasting friendships.

Sofia (Melodee, Naomi and Dave)

Over the summer I was lucky enough to be able to experience the French Immersion trip with Camille! I truly enjoyed each day I spent there. I learned so much that week and it truly was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken.

Camille took very good care of us and made sure we were all comfortable 100% of the time. As a family of four it’s hard to sometimes have privacy while traveling but here we were each able to have a lot of privacy. My cousin and I each had our own rooms and my grandparents shared one room. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms/house is lovely. She has a wonderful dog named Vinky who is just the sweetest. He didn’t cause one problem and was very friendly. We became fast friends. The meal times were also very good. Each meal that was home cooked by Camille was super delicious and filling.

During the day Camille would set us up with tours of the beautiful Paimpol and I also learned a lot that way. The French lessons were also very informative. As a 16 year old learning French in high scool I am very much a beginner in French I was a bit nervous going in, as my companions were both much better at French than I was but Camille was able to teach all three of us wonderfully. She was very patient, kind, and helpful. I never once felt judged for my French Level and I learned so much.

Not only did I come home with better French and resources to continue bettering my French, I also left with lots of amazing memories, shared experiences, and a trip I will remember for a lifetime!

Melodee (Sofia, Naomi and Dave)

It was a trip of a lifetime for me!

The accommodations were top notch: such elegant home decor with comfortable, private bedrooms for each of us. We loved the food so much we can’t wait to try to do them ourselves.

But, of course, Camille was our “rock star!” Her warmth, joie-de-vivre and ingenuity made each day so very special! In addition to our lessons we were treated to many surprises: tours of local sites, meet-ups with Camille’s family and friends, unique community events, and gourmet snacks and meals.

We are leaving with a heightened ability to understand French and the culture of Brittany, personal attention to our learning needs and a plan for further development. Wow, what a delight!

Naomi (Melodee, Sofia and Dave)

My family and I had a great time at the immersion stay with My French Friend! The three of us each had very private rooms that we were able to rest in. Camille has a truly lovely house and treated us to great meals.

We each learned a lot from our lessons, which were highly personalized, and very beneficial even though we all had very different abilities in French coming into our week stay.

The excursions that she sent us on, and the connections that she had in the Paimpol and Brittany community are unmatched. It was a great opportunity to practice French outside of the lesson times, and we were truly able to learn so much about the region and visit some of the great sites it has to offer.

I would definitely recommend this experience and learning method to anyone wanting to better their French!

Paul

I have just returned from an immersion week with Camille in Paimpol, and it was truly a five-star experience on every level. Previously, I tried traditional language schools, but I found the focus was mainly on grammar rather than speaking. Having been a fan of À Moi Paris and Camille’s newsletters for over a year, I decided to take a leap of faith and try a full immersion week. I do not regret it for a moment.

My main goal for the immersion was to speak as much French as possible, without the structure of daily formal lessons. Camille tailored my stay perfectly to suit my wishes. One of my passions, apart from learning French, is landscape photography https://www.instagram.com/paulbyrnephotography/

Camille arranged for me to spend an afternoon with a local professional landscape photographer. We visited several picturesque locations in Paimpol, and I had the chance to chat with him for more than four hours about all things photographic. Not only did I expand my technical vocabulary, but I also gained the confidence to discuss photography in French. Camille also introduced me to another photographer who runs a gallery in Paimpol—yet another chance to share our common interest, entirely in French.

My passion for photography was further indulged when Camille arranged an afternoon with Olivier, the other half of the À Moi Paris team. Olivier developed the À Moi Paris app, which I have used almost daily for the past year. It was fascinating to talk with him about the app’s development. He also took me to some stunning locations where I captured beautiful images. We topped off the afternoon with a delicious lunch of crêpes and local cider at a well-known crêperie.

The weather was beautiful, so I was able to swim several times with Camille and her charming partner, Jean-Loup. On the sunniest days, we enjoyed picnic lunches and dinners on the beach. Over the week, I had many enjoyable and meaningful conversations with Jean-Loup.

Other highlights included an afternoon with Ana, a local tour guide, who introduced me to several historical sites in the area. I also spent time with some of Camille’s friends, which exposed me to a wide variety of spoken French and different accents.

Camille’s hospitality was outstanding. I had my own private wing in her beautifully decorated home, filled with artistic touches. Every meal was homemade with fresh, local produce. If Camille ever decided to open a restaurant, I’m convinced it would be an instant success. Her home truly felt like a home away from home.

Camille also has a delightful little dog called Vinky. I’m not usually a dog person, but I fell completely in love with Vinky—without doubt the most charming and well-behaved dog I’ve ever met!

This immersion felt more like a holiday than a French course. Yet despite the relaxed atmosphere, I spoke more French during my week with Camille than I had in the previous two years. On average, I spoke French for about eight hours each day.

I wholeheartedly recommend an immersion with Camille if you want to make dramatic progress in your French while enjoying a five-star experience. I was so pleased with my stay that I have already booked another immersion with Camille next year—this time in Tenerife—where I look forward to spending more time with Jean-Loup and, of course, Vinky.

If you are reading this you are probably considering an immersion week chez Camille. I just got back from my week in Paimpol and my advice would be to book it ASAP. As a career French teacher who has lived, studied, worked, and traveled extensively in France and the francophone world, I am positive that nobody does immersion better than Camille Chevalier. You will have no regrets and you will gain so very much!

My goals were different than many of Camille’s usual students in that I didn’t need any formal languange lessons or grammar. I had been feeling pretty rusty and what I really needed was to SPEAK French non-stop for a week to re-activate my dormant repertoire and start to recover my French personality and confidence. From lack of use in recent years my French was suffering from some serious self-conciousness. It barely took 5 minutes for Camille to understand what she was dealing with, and from the very first afternoon she implemented a plan get me speaking as much as possible to as many different people as possible. I met and conversed with actors, sailors, doctors, volunteers, tour guides, runners, vendors, and of course, my teacher Camille and her lovely companion Jean-Loup. Their combined encouragement, openness, and kindness made for an easygoing and non-pressured week. The whole experience was incredibly valuable to me from a language standpoint. I spoke and heard a LOT of French, and each evening I benefited from Camille’s written summary of my vocabulary of the day and short assignments designed to solidify any new acquisitions.

Camille’s home and the town of Paimpol were ideal for an immersion week. Paimpol is a charming port town with great food and shopping, a bustling Tuesday market, and the most gorgeous coastal path that stretches for miles- a runner’s paradise! Camille’s house is only two blocks from the water and a walk to town for shopping, ice cream, market, and Bastille Day fireworks over the port. Paimpol is surrounded by adorable towns that I had the chance to discover with Camille and Jean-Loup as well as on special excursions specifically planned for me to practice my French with multiple people. Seeing that I love to stay active, Camille arranged an afternoon of hiking with a local young woman who knew every trail in the region and was also an excellent conversationalist. I enjoyed an afternoon with a friendly local licensed tour guide who was able to share multiple key sites in the area and tons of Breton history. I had never been to Brittany before so this was perfect.

My bedroom chez Camille was private and comfortable and had everything I needed. Being there felt like a true vacation, especially because Camille is a terrific cook who is careful to choose only the best ingredients. I finished everything she put in front of me and took seconds. Every meal was my ideal meal accompanied by wonderful conversation. What a treat to just be taken care of for a week!

On our last day we took the ferry over to Brehat for a picnic and afternoon of swimming and exploring on foot (no cars allowed). The scenery was out of a movie! Such a special place!

A word about Vinky, who might actually be the best dog in the world. If you love dogs, Vinky’s your man. If you don’t love dogs, he’s a non-issue. But it would be hard not to love this dog and his presence was most definitely additive during my stay in terms of cuddles and vocabulary. Camille has worked hard to train him and he just goes with the flow. The cutest!

My week in Paimpol was exactly what I needed it to be. It was, as expected, excellent for my French. Perhaps more significantly, though, it was a gentle and much-needed reminder that communication has very little to do with perfection and everything to do with opening up and letting go to help others see you and hear your message. Camille was born to teach and has found a very special way to share her expertise with language learners. Organized, detail oriented, encouraging, lively, and open, Camille wears her heart on her sleeve and seeks to provide an incredible all around experience for her students. I’m already pouring over my calendar to find a time to go back.

I thoroughly enjoyed my French Immersion stay in Paimpol with Camille. When I first met Camille at the train station, I immediately noticed that she was a very kind, warm, and fun person to spend time with. My first impression remained accurate for the entire week of my stay.
Camille is also extremely flexible regarding the visit and the French lessons that she provides. In fact, one month before my visit, she sent me a short questionnaire regarding my French level, expectations and preferences for the lessons, food preferences, interests, and what I would like to do and see in Brittany. She then painstakingly put together a full customized itinerary for the entire week. About a week after returning the completed questionnaire, I sent her a second message stating that I would also like to watch a French film at Cinéma Breiz, the local “cinema d’art et d’essai.” Although my itinerary for the week had already been completed, she was able to fit a delightful film (entitled Le Répondeur) into the already jam-packed schedule. This gesture was very much appreciated, as the film was one of the many highlights of my visit. An outdoor rock concert followed by a Saint-Jean bonfire, where I enjoyed a delicious “galette de sarrasin” was another highlight. There were many other wonderful experiences (too numerous to mention) during my week in Brittany.
In addition to being a great hostess, Camille is also an excellent French teacher who provided customized lessons along with several hours of French conversation. The lessons are not “one size fits all.” Instead, they are based upon the desires and abilities of the specific student, and the lessons can be revised at any time during the week. In addition to Camille, I had the pleasure of speaking French extensively with three other people during the numerous outings. This included her companion Jean-Loup, who possesses a sharp wit and an encyclopedic knowledge of French history.
Like everything else concerning my visit, the lodgings (very private) and the food were exceptional. Although my visit coincided with a heat wave, her home remained very pleasant and cool (perfect for getting a good night’s sleep). Camille went out of her way to provide meals based upon my personal tastes.
Last but not least, the Brittany region is an absolute paradise, especially for a beach lover like me. We went swimming at four different beaches, and I honestly cannot say which one was my favorite because they were all fantastic. Each beach had its own unique charms, and the water was fresh, cool, calm, and perfectly clear. Best of all, none of the beaches were at all crowded (unlike the beaches in the south of France).
When Camille brought me back to the train station for my return to Paris, my last words to her were: “C’était parfait !” I was not lying to her.
