Eunhi – 2017 – Immersion in France Dordogne

French immersion homestay france

Although I have learnt French for a long time in Australia, I have had limited practice in real life situations. As I wanted to learn more practical, everyday French and improve some areas that I am not strong at, I decided to stay in someone’s home for a week.

After researching on the Net, I got in touch with Chloé and made arrangements to travel to France. Chloé’s husband, Laurent, who came to pick me up from my hotel in Brive la Gaillarde, is a very easy, down-to-earth person and I straight away felt comfortable with him. He took me to meet Chloé and their adorable little girl, Cassandra, at their country home. Their house is in a small, very quiet village. Sometimes I did not see a single person in the area when I went out walking for exercise but the place is very tranquil and peaceful.

Everyday I had 3 hours of lessons with Chloe, revising grammar that I had already learnt but forgotten, refreshing other areas, and in particular improving my listening skills. Chloé was very flexible in accommodating my choice of time for my lessons. She was very good at finding my strong and weak points and adjusted her teaching to help me improve specific areas, particularly in understanding spoken French.

Usually after each lesson, I was able to interact with the whole family, particularly Laurent who was easy with conversation. He and Chloé were both very good hosts and invited me to join them in whatever they were doing during the day—picking tasty walnuts from the ground in their yard, going out for walks, visiting relatives and friends, joining Chloé in her yoga class or playing with Cassandra. I was treated like one of the family during my stay.

In addition to my lessons I had many opportunities to practice my French, talking with Chloé, Laurent, their family and friends, it was pretty much a total immersion course for me.

During my stay, I wasn’t interested in visiting many popular places in the Dordogne as I had seen some of them a few years ago. Instead, one day we went to Salat—which is beautiful—and other days we just soaked up the vibe in local areas and had lunch out with the family.

On two occasions I met Chloé’s friends when she invited them to her home. They were very nice people who showed a genuine interest in me learning French and spent a lot of time talking with me. This was a good opportunity for me to learn more about the way of life of French people and how they interact with foreigners. Chloé, Laurent, their family and friends were all very warm, kind and understanding people and I enjoyed my time with them immensely.

At Chloé’s home, they eat and drink lightly which suited me well. In the morning, Laurent would prepare a nice breakfast consisting of fresh croissant, baguette, yoghurt and their home made jams. He would cook a light lunch and for dinner we would have a snack. On one occasion when they had their friends over, Laurent cooked spaghetti Bolognaise which was superb, the tastiest spaghetti I have ever had. He is a good cook.

A couple of times we went for lunch to local restaurants where I  tasted specialties of the region such as duck confit and foie gras, which was my favourite. At one local restaurant popular with workers the service and hospitality was particularly good.

I recommend Chloe and Laurent to anyone who would appreciate the simple, warm and friendly country lifestyle that they offer. For me, staying with them was a very pleasant, memorable and rewarding experience.

France immersion

I stayed with Chloe and her wonderful family in October 2017.  I spent the most time with Chloe and Laurent and of course their amazing three year old,  Cassandre. From the arrival, I was treated like family and had many conversations on a range of subjects – from world politics to the adventures of Peppa Pig! – I also got to meet both Laurent’s father and Chloe’s mother – they were both charming and I enjoyed chatting to them. All were very understanding and patient with my stumbling French.

Chloe is a great teacher, she has a full range of resources that she customizes for each student. We covered many different areas, the key being actual conversations where Chloe would pose a question, we’d discuss and then we’d review language usage, pronunciation etc. It was a great way to learn and improve.

The house is in a very quiet area, ideal for a distraction-free learning environment. A highlight was the food – simple, fresh and light – Laurent is a great cook – I really enjoyed the soups. We did a couple of excursions; to Lascaux and one great hike in the woods.

All in all, this was  a great experience – highly recommended.

Chloé and Laurent were amazing hosts! They were focused on making our stay a productive one. I would say their biggest strength was their ability to “adopt” us into their family for a week. I’m sure we interrupted their family routines, but we never knew that we did, for they had an amazing way of working everything out so that we just felt like we belonged.

I honestly don’t know that I can give any weaknesses of the trip! It was such an incredible opportunity, and I feel blessed to have experienced it with Chloé and Laurent.

I felt as if we truly became part of Chloé’s family for the week. We were invited to participate in their family activities: breakfast, lunch, and dinner times were special, as was playing with their adorable 3-year-old daughter Cassandre.

We went on a long walk with the three of them the morning after we arrived, and they showed us around their beautiful village Beauregard-de-Terrasson. Cassandre looked for escargot and flowers, while we looked at the beautiful chateau that sits within view of their forest. I felt like we were in a Disney movie as we walked around their home, village, and nearby forest.

We were also privileged to meet Chloé’s mom, Marie-Paule, and Laurent’s mom Jacqueline. Interacting with Marie-Paule and Jacqueline allowed us a peek into grandparent-grandchild relationships and adult parent-adult child relationships.

Chloé is an excellent teacher! Each day she structured our class to focus on one grammatical structure, one pronunciation problem, new vocabulary specific to reading or listening comprehension activities, and of course, lots of dialogue. I especially liked her choice of topics for us to explore throughout the week. The big ideas included the internet, French food, travel, the new French president, and driving in France. She used the listening comprehension to help sharpen our listening and communication skills, but she also used it to expose us to current events in France.

We also met some neighbors (Thomas’ family) who had a farm right down the road. Laurent had been friends since he was a boy with Thomas and his family; Laurent’s father and Thomas’ father grew up as friends; and, Laurent’s grandfather and Thomas’ grandfather had been friends. We toured Thomas’ family’s farm on which they raised cows for beef, apples, walnuts, and trees for finding truffles. We had no idea that we would learn how to identify areas under trees that produce the best truffles in Périgord, but Sylvie (Thomas’ mom) showed us how. What a fun tour!

We ate well every day with Chloé and Laurent. The main cook in the family is Laurent, although he had help from his mother-in-law Marie-Paul, his mom Jacqueline, and Chloé. I don’t know if I could name a favorite dish, but we were served delicious quiche Lorraine, ratatouille, duck confit, rillettes de canard (or d’oie), baked pork chops, green beans and potatoes, egg omelette, tomato tarte, baked fish, chicken in pineapple curry sauce, vegetable soup, sweet potato soup, carrot salad, green salad, cucumber salad, all kinds of delicious cheeses, apple cake, cookies from Breton, walnut cake.We could not have asked for fresher, tastier, or more appealing meals. Every one of them was delicious!

I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to improve his or her language skills. I especially liked doing it with a colleague because it helped diminish the anxiety and intimidation of spending a week in a stranger’s home. I’m seriously trying to return next year to do a similar experience, and I believe that can be achieved because there are so many places and sites that we didn’t get to visit, and of course, there is a lot more language to learn.

It was truly a wonderful experience!

Suzanne and Géraldine – 2017 – French Immersion in France in Dordogne

French Immersion in France in Dordogne

We are two Australian sisters who are travelling in France for a year and wanted to improve our French language skills.

We had a wonderful ten days stay with Chloe and her family on their walnut farm in the beautiful Dordogne region in France.

Our lessons were with Chloe each morning during which Chloe focused on the areas in which we needed assistance. We practiced spoken French and listening skills which helped us enormously. Each day we had the chance to practice what we had learned in class with Chloe, Laurent and their daughter Cassandre. Their extended family and friends were also there to help us practice our French.

Our daily activities included meals with the family, shopping, going for walks and generally having a great time. All in French!

Chloe and Laurent organized some wonderful outings for us. We went to the incredible Lascaux caves, the beautiful town of Hautefort, hot air ballooning and horse riding. We loved the weekly market at Terrason where we felt immersed in the life of the town.

The food each day was always so fresh, wholesome and very delicious. Our accommodation was very comfortable, private and spotlessly clean. We were welcomed into the warmth of this family as we celebrated birthdays and friends visiting. We truly felt welcomed and cared for with this wonderful family.

For an amazing and authentic French experience where you can improve your French skills come to Dordogne and visit Chloe and Laurent.

Robin – 2017 – French Immersion in France in Dordogne

My stay was filled with activities that were fun and interesting. Whether it was walking around Beauregard with Chloé and Cassandre or hiking through the forest with Laurent, I was constantly intrigued by the beautiful surroundings and energetic company.

During my two week stay I got to : go to Lascaux and Château de Hautefort, watch the Tour de France in Montignac and fireworks in Terrasson for the 14th of July, go canoeing on the Dordogne with Laurent and on the Vézère with Chloé and her mother and go swimming four times in different lake, rivers and pools.

I just started taking French classes this year so I am at a beginning level of comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. That being said that Chloé was able to tailor my classes to my specific needs and gradually submerge me into the language so that I never felt overwhelmed.

learn french in dordogne immersion

Because I am such a beginner when I was speaking with Chloé or Laurent outside of my lessons I had to use English often. Both Chloé and Laurent are fluent in English and were happy to explain things to me if they saw that I was having difficulties understanding.

Even though I could not speak much French, I was able to listen to it constantly. When Chloé, her mother, Laurent talked during meals it was all in French and I could practice my listening skills. Also, a couple of friends, neighbors and family members stopped by which was nice because I got to hear different voices speaking. Everyone I encountered during my stay was welcoming and understanding.

Not only were the activities, lessons and company enjoyable, but the food that Laurent cooked was absolutely delicious. Every night we had something different, made with fresh ingredients from the garden or market.

I would highly recommend this program because of Chloé’s patient teaching style, the amazing food and beautiful surroundings. Chloé and Laurent make you feel at home right away, and their positive energy makes the learning environment and cultural experience even more phenomenal.

French Immersion in France Dordogne

I spent a lovely week with Chloé, her husband and their daughter Cassandre.

Having meals and going on walks with Chloe and her family was wonderful to experience life in a French household. We not only visited many of the towns and villages in the surrounding Dordogne region, but we also strolled into the local village and chatted at the dinner table about various topics ranging from politics to children. The food was always plentiful and delicious – even catering to my dietary needs.

Laurent and Chloe provided a lot of interesting information about their local area. We visited many different places in the area, each town/village had its own unique quality. Chloe and Laurent were very accommodating and keen to create an itinerary that would meet my needs and interests.

French Immersion in France Dordogne

Chloe’s lessons included plenty of opportunity to converse in French and learn more about the language using current affairs, songs etc. The lessons were very engaging as she made sure that the topics selected to deliver course content were suitable for my level of French. She was always very positive and constructive in her approach. Chloe also suggested websites/resouces that would be useful to me in future. Even though I was there just under a week, every effort was made to ensure that the number of tuition hours I received still met the terms of my contract which was commendable.

I would highly recommend this French immersion homestay experience as a unique way to learn about France, its language and its culture.

John – 2017 – French Immersion in France in Dordogne

At Chloe’s I could speak French all day and spend my time with a super friendly and welcoming French family. The teaching was fantastic and Chloé really put in a lot of effort to prepare lessons that helped me progress.

I really enjoyed going on hikes with the family and going into the town where they lived. I was introduced to their friends who were also very warm and welcoming. These people were very patient with my French.
We visited some beautiful towns in the region and also we visited a cave that I found fascinating.

Chloé was very flexible about the curriculum. I have been studying French for almost 30 years and was not interested in doing a lot of grammar. She and I both teach yoga so she designed lessons for me to teach yoga in French. It went very well and I feel fairly confident about doing so. Actually, I taught a private class today in Boston to a woman who is francophone and it went fairly well.

I met friends and neighbors as well as shopkeepers that Chloé and Laurent know.

The food was quite good. I appreciated the freshness of the food and I especially like to clafoutis and omelettes aux cèpes. Oh the bread was also irresistible. So much for my low carb obsession!. All good!

I was speaking French all day long. I went on a hike with some neighbors and had some great conversations with them.

I think that this type of stay is excellent. You speak from morning until night and your brain just absorbs incredible about even if you are an older learner like myself.

I spent one week at Chloé and Laurent’s house, and it was a wonderful vacation.

I went with my boyfriend, who is a native French speaker, and we really enjoyed my immersion experience!

The week was packed with activities. We went with the whole family to swim in rivers twice because it was hot, we visited the Jardins de l’Imaginaire in Terrasson with Laurent, and we visited Sarlat and Roque-Gageac with the family. The Fête de la St-Jean was during our stay, and we went to a party with the family for that as well.

We decided to rent a car, and on our own we were able to visit the Lascaux 4 museum, the town of Montignac, the cave (grotte) de Tourtoirac, and the Chocolaterie Bovetti. We would highly recommend all of these activities! There is so much to do in the area and there is hardly time to do everything. For that reason, we are very happy that we rented a car.

I took one yoga class with Chloé at the very end of my stay, and I also recommend this.

Chloé is a dedicated, organised, and gifted teacher. She evaluated my level during the first dinner, when we arrived, and immediately prepared my class for the next morning. I was never bored during her classes as she had a variety of activities for us, and she was able to focus on the areas where I needed the most help. I live in Montréal, and she even went out of her way to find listening examples of people who had Québec accents!

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed getting to know Chloé, Laurent, and their daughter Cassandre! Cassandre is extremely charming and this made our stay even more fun. We enjoyed the meals both for the food and for the company.

Chloé and Laurent have lived and traveled all over, so there is a lot to talk about. Chloé, Laurent, and of course Cassandre, spoke French with me the whole week. This is what I need, so I was very happy, and sometimes tired!

My classes were specifically catered towards my needs, and the experience was a true French immersion.Thank you Chloé, Laurent, and Cassandre for a wonderful immersion week and introduction to Dordogne!

Chloé and Laurent’s house in the country is a perfect place to study French.

They provided comfortable accommodations and you have access to them most all the time.

I went on a hike with both of them at separate times, which was a great way to practice French.

We also went to a farmer’s market and to the caves of Lascaux.

Although it is in the country, there is a lot to explore !

I enjoyed talking with them while making lunch and/or dinner, then long discussions during our meals. And their young daughter is adorable and fun to play with (another good way to practice!)

You really can engage as much as you want. I also spent time studying in my room.

I highly recommend Chloé, she is an excellent instructor.

My stay with Chloé and her family was excellent. It was a great mix: from the one-on-one French lessons to general conversation in French while enjoying delicious meals to Yoga lessons in French. I genuinely enjoyed my stay and getting to know her and her lovely family. I learned so much.

Chloé was always respectful, patient, and helpful. Her husband, Laurent, was very patient and kind as well. He always spoke clearly and slowly for me, so I could understand.

We had lunch and dinner together each day where we engaged in conversation in French. They always spoke to me clearly and slowly. They were so respectful, kind, and supportive no matter how poor my speaking was.

I visited the famous Lascaux caves during my stay. Instead of doing a second excursion, I decided to do a yoga lesson with Chloé each day. While the lessons were in French, it was a great change from the formal lessons. I found it very helpful in recharging in order to tackle the afternoon French lessons.

We spoke French during my entire stay. Chloé, Laurent, and the adorable Cassandre and I interacted during the meals. I was able to learn about their walnut business, where they lived before, etc. during our conversations. It was great to learn more about them. Of course, I also spoke with Chloé in French during my lessons as well.

Laurent did a great job preparing all the food, and it was excellent. It was healthy but tasty. There were lots of fresh vegetables and fruits which was great. It was wonderful to experience some of the local dishes and products.

Laurent’s mother came to visit for a few days during my stay, so I was able to interact with her as well. I also met some other friends that stopped by one afternoon. We all enjoyed some delicious cake and went for a walk around the village.

Chloé prepared various different activities to do during my lessons. She was very receptive to that I wanted my main focus to be on improving my speaking. We did some exercises in workbooks, played some games, listened to audio/watched videos, etc. I usually had 2 hours of lessons in the morning and then 1 hour in the afternoon. I liked that split as it allowed me to have a bit of a break and recharge for the afternoon session.

The family was very welcoming and made me feel at home immediately. Chloé kept the lessons interesting and amusing. She taught using different techniques that helped me learn quickly and easily. She was very knowledgeable and explained to me much about the French life.

We went grocery shopping together : the whole family with cousins and I spent an afternoon at the pool in Brive ; we dropped by to visit their friends on a farm and were warmly welcomed with drinks and a walk to visit the animals.

I went to Le Bournat with Chloé. I learned a lot about the French life during the 19th century while enjoying the rides and games at the Fête Foraine. I also visited Lascaux which is impressive to see.

The food was delicious. Chloé being mostly vegetarian, meals were filled with scrumptious legumes catering nicely to my vegetarian diet.

I met cousins, aunts, mothers, fathers, the neighbors… Everyone was very friendly and kindly paid attention when talking to me.

Chloé is a superb teacher. She very quickly identified my needs and weaknesses and tailor-made a course to help me. She is always organised, motivational, cheerful, helpful, speaks clearly and slowly. I have made enormous progress and gained a lot of confidence in speaking French. She has given me a lot of tips to help me to continue improving, especially in speaking and pronunciation.

Chloé and her husband Laurent are a great team. Together, they have ensured I enjoyed my stay with them. The meals I have had with them are healthy and delicious and always fresh.

Dordogne is a beautiful region. The added bonuses of my 2 weeks immersion course are :

  • visiting some historical sites such as Lascaux Caves and Gouffre de Padirac.
  • attending a concert in a church
  • running and discovering some beautiful landscapes in the area

I have achieved more than I ever imagined. I have made some new friends. Thank you Chloé and Laurent

The lessons with Chloé were very helpful and focused on my interests and « special needs », grammar and pronunciation. Her recommendations for further study will be useful.

My room was very nice and quiet with a great view, lots of light and comfortable bed.

The best point was the family interaction especially with the adorable Cassandre. I really liked meeting the neighbors – so friendly.

Laurent is very funny and smart. I liked our long walk and our political and historical discussions.

I spent a fantastic week at Chloé’s home. The French courses were very interesting. The courses always focused on my favorite themes, so I was never feeling bored. The distribution of French courses and spare time was perfect. Besides, I had an opportunity to learn “Child French language” with Cassandre. She is so sweet!

We walked a lot in surroundings and I was very happy to meet French inhabitants. There are many beautiful places and panoramic views not far from the village. We celebrated Chloé’s birthday with her family, it was wonderful! I really felt like I be part of the family all week long.

Madeline – 2016 – French Immersion in France at Chloé’s

I really enjoyed my week with Chloé and her family. I became much more comfortable in speaking French, and left feeling confident and motivated to continue learning.

I was very impressed with Chloé’s knowledge and experience in teaching French. She used several approaches and a range of different materials to cover pronunciation, vocabulary, and conjugations and to practice speaking, listening and reading skills.

As well as the lessons, living with a French family allowed me to pick up on other aspects… I now watch Peppa Pig en français!

During meal times, everyone was very attentive to use simpler phrases that I could understand.

When I was not in class, I enjoyed driving around the Dordogne area and visiting some of the beautiful sites and practicing my French as well. With a GPS, it was very easy to get around and many villages offer a tourist information centre, along with a boulangerie and pâtisserie for when you get hungry!

I would definitely recommend this course for anyone interested in learning or improving their French. »

I was made very welcome by Chloe and Lauren and enjoyed my stay throughout.

They live in a beautiful little village with lovely surrounding countryside but within easy access also of Sarlat, Brive and Perigueux.

My stay was very relaxing and would say that French language lessons with Chloe were also very useful.

I Particularly enjoyed Chloe’s home cooking and ‘sympa’ ambience.

It was very nice to always speak French with you, your family and the other people staying at the house. Even though we never spoke English, I feel like we learned a lot about each other’s lives.

The lessons were very good, and I use the handouts that you gave me. Now I listen to myself (after recording) and practice the pronunciation. I appreciate very much the Program (that you wrote up for me) and I bought the vocabulary book that you recommended

The most important thing for me was that I gained confidence in speaking French, and I know what I have to do to improve.

Marlies – 2016 – French Immersion in France in Dordogne

french immersion in france and yoga in dordogne

I spent one week at Chloé and Laurent’s and I wish I could stay longer! My French improved a lot.

First because Chloé’s classes are very efficient — she can propose a lot of different ways to learn and understand one specific point and is always very engaging.

And second because I could practice what I had just learnt in real situation, when having lunch or small talks, with Chloé and Laurent who are so kind and smiling, but also with their wonderful daughter Cassandre.

With them, you can also go visit Lascaux Cave or Eyzie de Taillac or Hautefort Castle. These amazing sites are very close to their house which, by the way, is very nice and has a beautiful view on the valley.

I took a few yoga lessons because I wanted to discover it and it was great. And that was a good occasion to build my French anatomy vocabulary!

One week in the beautiful Dordogne region, learning a beautiful language, practising my mind and my body with fine people… I am already waiting to come back last year!

A très bientôt j’espère !
