Meet Raymonde - your French tutor, language buddy & host In Switzerland

Bonjour and welcome to my home.

My name is Raymonde and I have been living here for the last 25 years. I have three grown up sons: they have all left the nest. I live with my partner Michel who is a very keen cyclist. We will be happy to take you out to explore the countryside either on a mountain bike or a regular bike. We have two electric bikes available for your use.

At a very young age I had a passion for languages, and was fascinated with people from other cultures. I lived in London for a year to learn English, and then in Zurich to learn German, so I’m fluent in both languages.

I started teaching languages 25 years ago, shortly after my second son was born, first setting up a clientele of friends, neighbours and expats. I then got my diploma in teaching French and started working in private language schools.

Soon, I realised students best benefited from combining grammar with real life experiences, in a more relaxed environment. So I started offering immersion stays in my own home.

I hope to welcome you soon for an immersion stay “chez moi”.

The town of Nyon is at a 35 min train ride from Geneva Airport. Then I’ll come and pick you up in my car!

Learn French In Switzerland – Your French immersion Program in Gingins, Vaud

I live in a small village called “Gingins” in the area of “la Côte”, surrounded by the Lake Geneva (called “Lac Léman” in French), the Jura Mountains and the vineyards, not to mention the convenient access to Geneva and Lausanne (30min) and to Nyon (15min).

The coast of Lake Geneva is the perfect balance between pristine nature and beautiful towns: Montreux, Vevey, Morges… There are also typical Swiss villages in the mountains, and amazing medieval strongholds.

Lake Geneva has daily cruises to France, where one can visit the medieval town of Yvoire and Evian with the publicly available Evian water spring.

A cog train can easily take you up to ” Les Rochers de Naye” – a mountain peak with 360 degrees view of the mountain ranges, the lake and the towns around it.

I feel privileged because region is really interesting year-round:

  1. Its well marked cycling routes are especially enjoyable in the spring when the air is still brisk. In the many parks, the flowers in bloom offer a gorgeous contrast against the blue of the lake and the mountain peaks.
  2. There are many lake-side activities to enjoy in the summer : with the mountains so close, the weather usually is warm but not too hot. It’s also a great time to enjoy hikes.
  3. In the fall, the nature all around this area is just amazing – it’s the time of wine harvest and there are many wine related events.
  4. In the winter, Jura is the top region for hiking, snowshoeing, cross country or downhill skiing. The views of the mountains and trees covered in pure white snow are breathtaking.

Your French Immersion Homestay Accommodations in Gingins, Vaud

My home is a spacious three-story house set in a calm and safe Swiss country village.

I love my house and raised my sons here. So many memories… I had time to think over the details and make it as comfortable as I like it to be.

There is a large hearth/fireplace which really sets up a nice mood in the evening, as we crash on the sofas and read, chat or watch TV.

My kitchen is an important part of the house: it’s an open kitchen and my guests and students like to sit by the counter (and enjoy a glass of wine) as I cook. I like to entertain and often have friends and family over – you’ll meet them too!

At the back of the house, there is a nice garden with a large terrace and a gorgeous view: on the other side of the orchard, there is a little church and a castle. It’s all very quiet and safe here. You can borrow my bike and go play golf, pet horses, stroll the vineyards and enjoy the many walks in the countryside around us.

Your Private Bedroom And Bathroom

Your room is large and comfortable. It was fully renovated in 2016.

Your private bathroom is fully equipped with a shower, a toilet, and a sink.

There is a queen size bed, a TV, a large choice of DVDs in French, access to wifi, a nice comfortable armchair to read, and a little “bureau”.

I have an additional single guest bedroom with a private bathroom and a nice balcony.

I enjoyed a dreamy ten days in Gingins chez Raymonde—swimming in the lake, biking through picturesque Switzerland/France, visiting bars in the lively cities Lausanne and Genève, and learning and laughing with Raymonde and Michel.

I came primarily to improve my French. Though I had taken some French courses in high school, I had forgotten many of the basics and felt very self-conscious about my prononciation. It was an invaluable experience to wake up each day and speak French with Raymonde—who was very patient and would kindly correct me and explain away my errors—and to engage in intensive study each day. For me, it was important to have grammar lessons each day and to work through exercises 1-on-1, at my own pace. I think it was immensely valuable to have an individualized lesson. In the past, I had learned French in classrooms where it was impossible to tailor the program to my needs and abilities.

In addition to the French speaking and learning opportunities, Raymonde’s house is located in a beautiful area in Switzerland. It was very easy to navigate without a car. I took a train into Genève and Lausanne (beautiful cities overlooking the lake and providing exciting opportunities to practice French with native speakers). Each time Raymonde offered to accompany me and show me specific sights, but also gave me breathing room to enjoy the city on my own.

We took breathtaking bike rides to the lake, and to France. Raymonde has bikes and gear and was pleased to outfit me for the rides. The views were truly unbeatable, the air is pure, and the lake was crystal-clear (I even jumped into the lake for a freezing but refreshing dunk).

Other activities included viewing a film in French with Raymonde, hiking through the snow and eating authentic fondue, enjoying Raymonde’s spectacular cooking, and wine tasting with Raymonde.

The experience transcended my expectations, and I highly recommend this program for any solo/young travellers in particular. (Also, don’t hesitate to enrol because of hesitations about your French ability—the nature of the program is that it is truly customized, and Raymonde provides a safe environment to make mistakes and learn along the way.)

I don’t know how to express what an amazing time I had learning and laughing with Raymonde. She is warm, welcoming, and an extraordinary teacher of the French language.

This was the first immersion program I’ve ever done, and I was a bit hesitant to stay with someone I didn’t know. But I decided that it was worth a shot, and it turned out to be well worth it! Raymonde was always in constant contact before my trip, which helped me feel at ease when I arrived in Geneva. The trains are very simple to learn and there is no need for a car. She was happy to come get me at the station in Nyon and was immediately upbeat and a lovely person to be around.

I spent ten days with Raymonde and Michel in their charming house, surrounded by the picturesque Swiss landscape and enjoying the delicious nourishing food Raymonde prepared. The first week I studied by myself at an intermediate/advanced level, and then I was joined by my boyfriend the last few days. He was just starting to learn French, but he was still able to join on the excursions and be introduced to the French language. Even though the weather was a bit rainy during my time, I was able to appreciate the beauty and serenity of the small village and explore other larger cities nearby. No matter the weather, it is stunning! We are already planning another trip back, but this time in the winter so we can enjoy all the wonderful cold weather activities and see the lovely mountains covered in snow!

Raymonde is able to find what each individual person needs and wants to focus on. We did lessons for a few hours everyday and would also go on excursions during the week. We even learned how to cook a few classic dishes! All in French, of course! I can’t believe how much confidence and progress I have gained within just ten days! Not only are the lessons helpful but she is a lovely person to converse with in general. You are welcomed into her home to be a part of the family, but she also leaves you to your space if you want it. I highly recommend this program, it has far surpassed all of my expectations!

Raymonde and her partner Michel could not have been more welcoming and quickly put me at ease. I had travelled to Raymonde in order to practice and gain confidence in speaking French. The greatest compliment I could give her was when I realised during a delicious home cooked evening meal that I had been speaking French all day! From breakfast through to blueberry tart in the mountains in the afternoon to the relaxed evening supper!

Raymonde is an intuitive and caring teacher and my immersion week with her was educational, inspiring and soulful. I can’t thank her enough and will be returning at the earliest possible opportunity.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my week of total immersion with you. It has completely surpassed my expectations even with the glowing reference I was given by a past student of yours who is a friend of mine from home.

What became immediately apparent to me was that you intended to tailor your instruction to my needs. No one had ever done that for me as I have mostly just been in group classes. You then brought a variety of approaches to our lessons. At times, the emphasis was on grammar points either of your or my choosing complete with examples and exercises to reinforce the lessons. Sometimes we role played in French or listened to short articles of interest always with the idea of practicing oral comprehension. We even listened to French songs and then studied the lyrics.

Besides our actual lesson times, I enjoyed the casual conversation about whatever we were thinking about or doing at the moment. This could have taken place on one of our two delightful excursions or preparing and enjoying a meal together. You know you are truly having an immersion experience when you are learning on the spot! I even came to really appreciate being corrected a lot. Who else would do that for me so tirelessly? It was a gift!

In conclusion, I want to thank you for accepting me into your home and bringing the French language even closer to my heart. J’espère revenir un de ces jours!

Jeannie & Mégane

My daughter Megan and I love the French language. We both have studied in school but don’t have the opportunity to hear or speak the language at home. So we decided to spend a week with Raymonde in her beautiful home in Gingins, Switzerland.

Raymonde is an excellent teacher. She’s highly qualified and has years of experience. She quickly assessed our levels and created a lesson plan. She spoke to us only in French and gently corrected us as we tried to make conversation. Her lessons were interesting and lively. She even managed to make a few grammar sessions fun.

The best class and the one we will always remember is listening to Edith Piaf and singing along with Raymonde.

Born in Gruyère, Raymonde is proud of her heritage and was eager to share her culture with us. She took us to the medieval city of Lutry and to the ancient hillside vineyards of Lavaux. We ate lunch in a charming restaurant overlooking the vineyards and Lake Léman. One day we hiked in the Jura Mountains past cows grazing in the meadows to a restaurant where we enjoyed a traditional fondue and Chasselas wine from the Vaud region.

Since Raymonde’s house is only a 10 minute walk to a bus stop, we didn’t need to rent a car. Raymonde helped us with bus and train schedules so we were able to make the most of our free afternoons. We visited the lakeside towns of Nyon and Montreux. And we took «le train à crémaillère » to Rochers-de-Naye, 2040 meters high.

Raymonde and her charming, witty companion Michel opened their arms and their hearts to us, and for this my daughter and I will always be grateful.

I have spent a wonderful week with Raymonde in Switzerland!

To begin, I arrived solo using the public transportation from Geneva airport. It was super easy, so you do not need to worry about the trains. Raymonde came to fetch me from the Nyon train station. From the beginning I felt welcome as Raymonde is a warm person. She let me feel comfortable to begin speaking French whenever I felt ready which was reassuring and also a perk of this personal program. Everyday we would sit and study according to what I wanted and needed using many techniques like story books, practice pages, songs and of course a lot of talking through out the whole day.
I truly feel that I have achieved my goal of speaking fluently in French and at the same time I had a wonderful holiday.

Through out the week we took advantage of the great weather of autumn, so went walking in nature everyday.
Those walks and Raymonde’s delicious cooking were a treat! We went together to buy the products for the meals from the neighboring farms, so everything was organic and of the best quality.
The area is beautiful and calming with its rolling hills, vineyards full of plumpy grapes and apples trees with big appels ripe for picking.

I think the highlight of our days together was our excursion up the Jura mountain. The air was crisp, the cow’s bells were gently ringing in the breeze as we saw butterflies fluttering across the open fields. And as a treat, at the end of our walk we sat outside a restaurant to eat a cheese fondu! I learned that one must try Swiss fondu while drinking white wine.
Another beautiful place near Gingins is Nyon, the nearest city which sits on Lake Geneva. We had some delicious ice cream there!

I got to meet Julien, Raymonde’s youngest son, and also Michel her partner. I truly felt accomplished when Michel and I spoke only in French and I understood his jokes!
The best way to describe Raymonde is that she is serious about her work like the Swiss but at the same time she is fun like the Italians!

My experience at Raymonde’s home was exceptional on several levels.

Her conscientious hospitality was always a comfort. My privacy was respected, yet I was also welcomed into her family.

She spent much time with me on my lessons, of course, but also took me around the communities in the the area and taught me about the lifestyle they enjoy. We walked, biked and even swam in Lake Geneva!

I am really a beginning French student and Raymonde was understanding and able to accommodate my particular needs in my studies.

It was one of my most memorable trips and I want to go back!!

Raymonde’s home is precisely as described in the materials: warm, spacious, welcoming, peaceful. The bedroom for her students is comfortable, attractive and quiet. I felt very at home, and enjoyed Raymonde’s excellent cooking and presentation of beautiful, healthy meals. J’ai bien mangé! If you have special eating needs (or are a picky eater like me), she will graciously work around your issues, sharing satisfying meals during which you will be practicing your French and learning more and more without even noticing it because you are having fun and eating well all at once!

For me, it was an extra bonus to ride Raymonde’s electric bike around the area. I had such fun exploring the countryside. I also was blessed with lovely weather, but it seems Raymonde is very well equipped to make literally any weather suitable for a hike, walk, or other outdoor enjoyment. The excursions we took together greatly exceeded my expectations, and I will treasure my memories of visiting the terraces of the Lavaux vineyards and enjoying a tiny glass of rose wine al fresco in the old city of Geneva.

Our excursions offered the unique opportunity to run into Raymonde’s friends who are so pleased to see her and are happy to chat. Hearing real spontaneous conversations and participating in them (or trying to!) is an opportunity to experience French in a truly unique and special way.

My week with Raymonde and her family greatly exceeded my expectations. To begin with, the countryside around the town of Gingins is incredibly beautiful, calm and peaceful. I chose Switzerland mostly for practical reasons such as proximity and ease of navigating to other locations, thus I was so pleasantly surprised to find the splendor awaiting me when Raymonde suggested we tackle my jetlag with a walk. I was thrilled to take in the scenery of the area, from the beautiful stone fountains in each village to the snow-covered mountain peaks in the distance, to the manicured vineyards and farms.

But I came here to learn! And Raymonde is a superb French teacher and fascinating person. She is full of discussion-generating questions and has lived a very interesting and compelling life. Her students never lack for subjects to discuss and surely all must find her to be welcoming, supportive and someone who you’ll be proud to call a friend.

Tatiana & Ryan

When I was searching for an French immersion experience I found the opportunity to stay with Raymonde Fahrni in beautiful Switzerland.  The experience was beyond my expectations.  I met Raymonde as a guest and left feeling as if I was part of her extended family. Her gentle guidance, nurturing, and positive personality did wonders for my confidence in speaking and experimenting with the French language. Her house is nestled within a beautiful small village that’s close to everything.  We had daily adventures and site-seeing opportunities that allowed for a true immersion experience within the culture, expanding the opportunities to practice speaking and listening to French in a variety of daily situations — with a friend by my side! Teacher, travel partner, advocate, and friend – Raymond is amazing and made the experience one I will treasure and remember with great fondness.  (I’m already thinking about the next visit!)

It has been several days since we said good-bye, and the memory of our 10 days together is still so fresh in my mind. I truly feel like I experienced the region and culture in a way that I never could have on my own. It was so special to be there during the August 1st fête, to learn about the country’s history, and celebrate with you. Having meals and spending time with your family and friends took the immersion experience to a level I wasn’t expecting but very much appreciated.

Thank you for making me feel at home in your lovely home, and for providing such healthy and delicious meals. J’ai bien mangé ! As your student, I was impressed by how easily you picked up on topics that I needed to work on. You explained complicated concepts very well, and provided me with additional resources that I plan to use at home with my studies. You also gave me confidence to join a French speaking meetup group as soon as I get home.

The excursions you took me on were unforgettable. The tinkling of cowbells in the mountains as we hiked and enjoyed fondue at the top was magical. Wine tasting on the mountainside with beautiful food and a perfect view of Lac Léman was a dream. Experiencing the market in Divonne and swimming in the lake was so lovely. You also offered so much good advice for adventures to take on my own time.

You are elegant, charming, and funny – a pleasure to be around! Thank you for all your hospitality, generosity, knowledge, and inspiration. I hope I can come back again, next time in the winter to do some snowshoeing!

Superlatives can’t fully describe the wonderful week I’ve just spent with Raymonde. She is a very knowledgeable Prof and able to easily help you understand meanings and usages due to her fluency in multiple languages.

Her teaching aids include not only straight grammatical exercises, but also Citations and Proverbs and current journal articles. One not only improves their knowledge of the French language, but of the francophone community as well.

French is not just a language, but the expression of a culture and lifestyle. Raymonde and her fiancé Michel are very warm people who live a healthy and ecologically conscious lifestyle. At meal time she says that she is only putting a few things together, but the results are always delicious and spot on for the occasion. Dining al fresco is a delight in the calm of her beautiful yard.

Her beautiful home is incredibly conveniently located and the guest suite has been recently renovated and is very fresh. Just steps from her front door, one can bike up a mountain or walk country lanes. Near Nyon, one can visit small country villages, UNESCO World Herritage vinyards, Lake Leman, Lausanne, Geneva and more. Besides being très sympathique, Raymonde and Michel are avid cyclists.

Whether you’re interested in flat cruiser rides, or road and mountain bike climbs such as la montée de la Bariellette, they can put you on the right path.

Although I feel like I did so much with the excursions, bike rides, and walks, I want to go back armed with the knowledge of what more I can accomplish. It really is possible to study French in an immersion situation and tour and be physically active in the same week.

The only thing that holds you back is your lack of imagination because Raymonde has all the tools that you need. I highly recommend the French immersion homestay with Raymonde in Nyon, Switzerland.

I enjoyed & benefitted so much during our time together, also you family & your generous friends – the evening dinner was wonderful in the lovely garden.
Some of my family in Australia were in mountains last week sking & endeavoured to replicate the delicious fondue as described by me that we enjoyed so much at the ’rustic restaurant’ ( my words) after our walk in the mountains. And of course the ‘opera’ in the castle was an extraordinary experience, I kept the program/libretto to study at home.

The following weekend I could not stop talking in French with my hosts-all that I hadn’t tried out with you…but couldn’t have done otherwise.
So thanks and au revoir!

The immersion program with Raymonde, which I just finished this morning, was amazing. She is not only a great French teacher, but also a nice and amusing person.

My day in her home started every morning with delicious breakfast with full of local fruits and bread, together with a nice cup of coffee. Thanks to the great summer weather, I could also enjoy having meals several times at the terrasse, where one can enjoy a fantastic back-yard view with the relaxing bell sound from the nearby church. Raymonde is such a skilled cook and her dishes are all succulent !

I had requested Raymonde in advance to focus on my listening skill training. The lesson materials which she prepared for me was right on the spot. The listening texts she chose were all very interesting to study. She assisted me understanding up to the very subtle nuance differences among the words/expressions with her clear explanation. She adjusted the speed and articulation when talking to me, which helped me to take her lessons by using French throughout the week.

In regard to the afternoon excursions, she took me for a cycling tour to the nearby French region town, ‘Divonne-les-Bains’. It was a memorable tour, where one can enjoy the Suisse-France boarder area scenery. Riding on an electricity-powered bicycle was pleasant and I was surprisingly not exhausted at all. The excursion to Geneve Old Town, was also enjoyable. We tried a classical piano concert in a church and enjoyed Chopin, Mozart, Scriabin and Ginastera’s master pieces.

Raymonde also suggested me to visit a town called ‘Yvoire’, which is only 20 minutes away from Nyon by boat. A quiet yet lovely town to visit.

Besides the lesson, my private room was comfortable to stay in. I enjoyed staying in the room after the lesson and in the evening, revising what I studied, catching up with my friend using the wifi (strong reception), and taking a good nap on the comfortable queen size bed. Every morning I woke up with the sound of little birds’ chirping outside the window.

I met some of Raymonde’s friends in town. They are all very friendly and patiently listened to my ‘yet-to-be-improving’ French and continued to speak with me in French, which assisted me practising my conversation skills.

It was a great experience to stay in Raymonde’s house and immersed myself well in the Francophone environment for an entire week. This was my 2nd immersion program via French Today. I found the town Nyon in Suisse excellent to stay in order to study French because the people are relaxed and friendly, and they don’t mind speaking in French with a person who is obviously not a fluent French speaker.

After returning to Australia, I will continue to study French further. By the time I return to Raymonde’s home next time, my French has to be good enough to understand Michel’s blagues without explanation J

Thank you, Raymonde, for all your great lessons and hospitality !!

I have just completed a second immersion with Raymonde. I enjoyed the first one so much that I returned this time for 10 days.

She has helped me enormously, especially in the area of improving my confidence in speaking and in pronunciation . Raymonde is a highly experienced, diligent teacher as well as a very warm and generous person with a wonderful sense of humour. She loves this work and it is obvious. She has a marvellous sense of curiosity , adventure and flexibility and demonstrates a real investment in getting to understand the unique requirements of each student on their journey to learn French.

She is extremely patient and attentive and the food she provides is amazing ( again tailored to your needs.)

The house is beautifully situated amongst the green countryside and my bedroom was extremely comfortable.

It has been a perfect stay and Raymonde is an exceptional person in every way.

I will be back – why not !
