Meet Béatrice - your French tutor, language buddy & host In France
We are a family of 6 with four adult children who will probably not be home but you'll get to meet my husband Bernard and our cats may pop in during some lessons. We relocated twice to the US with our children for a total of 18 years. We are therefore not only bilingual but also bi-cultural... and dual citizens! During those years in California (Bay Area south of San Francisco), I became a Substitute teacher in High School and tutor for Adults. I truly enjoyed the connections I made and decided to offer immersion classes in addition to my online classes because I want to share my love for our new life in France... and our home is perfectly designed for hosting. As a bilingual English speaker, I can easily understand and correct students' mistakes. I always strive to provide explanations and mnemonics for any grammar rules or new vocabulary. I also speak enough Spanish to bridge the gaps with Spanish Grammar. We want our guests to feel comfortable. I cook most of our meals from scratch and will do my best to accomodate any dietary restriction you may have. However I might need some input and help from you if you are a vegan. Please note that there are cats in the house and that it could be an issue if you have a cat allergy.

My teaching style
I believe that speaking French is not an objective in and of itself, but rather a way to discover the country, the culture, the inhabitants…and above all to do in French what you already like to do. My goal is to empower you to express yourself and communicate about the fields that are of interest to you. Even though we will be seating at the same table, we might use a shared google doc just because it is simpler to keep track of what we are talking about and it allows you to see in writing what you hear. I use grammar books as a way to structure your learning experience and review points that need explaining / working. Based on your level, I will often find newspaper or online articles about topics of interest to help build up specific vocabulary. If you are game for it, I will assign you some writing exercises as they are the best way to identify recurring mistakes than can then be fixed. As an experienced ToastMaster, I will also help you speak up and find your French voice. We will use all outings as an opportunity for you to go to the Post Office, the pharmacy, the bakery so that you will feel confident in your abilities to be understood and self-sufficient.
My French Immersion program
I will pick you up at Toulon train station on your arrival (Sunday) and bring you back to the station on the day you leave (Saturday). Every day will start with breakfast at 8 (your chance to tell a decent croissant from a bad or great one) and will be followed by 3 hours of formal (books and exercises) or less formal instruction (go shopping at the market for instance). Then we will prep lunch together ...and enjoy it with a glass of rose wine of course! You will get to choose 2 outings for afternoons or evenings - some local place we can visit in less than 4 hours. Should you want to go further we can make it a day outing. If you came with friends or family, depending on their interest and level in French, they can share the class with you or just the outings. Since your class fee is disconnected from your housing fee, you can even decide to extend your stay in one of our rentals without taking classes... or choose another local housing! Everything is possible - just ask!
Learn French In France – Your French immersion Program in La Garde, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
Provence encompasses a large region in the southern part of France. Toulon is in the département (an administrative division) called Var which goes from the Mediterranean to the Southern Alps. It is a great base to start exploring the coast and backcountry. Thanks to the Navy owning a lot of coastal land, the surroundings are not as developed as other parts of the coast and have retained their charm. It is less crowded than other summer resorts nearby. The views are absolutely stunning from the littoral trail and even more impressive on the islands of Port-Cros and Porquerolles nearby. People will swim / snorkel / scuba dive in the sea from May until October. No sharks to be feared. Toulon is very well connected by train to both Marseille (45 minutes) and Cannes / Nice (90 minutes). Direct High Speed trains take you to Paris in less than 4 hours. Ferries sail from its port to Corsica / Sardinia and Italy. In terms of history, Toulon is where the landing in Provence happened during WW2 - a museum located at the top of the local hill presents the unfolding of the events. The American Cemetery in Draguignan is the resting place of the fallen American soldiers. The Mediterranean diet is no myth and local people tend to eat what they find in season at the market. You will also of course try the famous vin rose de Provence which is produced locally.

We were looking for an immersive experience on la Cote d’Azur, and found so much more during our week at “Bernice”. Beatrice went “above and beyond” to insure our visit was everything we’d hoped for and more.
We felt at home in our comfortable bungalow and in their kitchen where we enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and meal preparation after shopping at indoor & outdoor markets.
We had a few formal French classes, but opted for language learning in the practical setting.
She showed us beautiful beaches and sights we would not have known to explore without her guidance. Also, recommended delicious restaurants for dinner.
She is adventurous and energetic with a great sense of humour. Her husband Bernard was also very hospitable and supportive.
We highly recommend “Bernice” and look forward to returning .
I experienced a lovely week with Béatrice in her home near Toulon. She was welcoming and kind as well as being happy at all times to help me learn French.
She has a great store of stories to tell and is very knowledgeable across a wide range of topics.
Thank you Béatrice!
Béatrice is energetic, kind, and a great French teacher. She tailored our lessons to my interests and expected social settings. She also opened doors to French history, social customs, and culture. She loves great food and bad (i.e. good) jokes. My wife accompanied me in a non-student role, and Béatrice graciously made her feel welcomed and included in our meals and outings. Béatrice’s property, Bernice, is beautiful and quiet, and our cabin was clean, comfortable, and air-conditioned. Tout était super !
“My time with Beatrice in Toulon was delightful. She was warm, friendly, and easy to get along with.
My favorite part of being with Beatrice for the week was how immersive she helped me become in the culture and language. I no longer felt like a tourist – I went to church, I went to the market, I ate dinner with friends … all the while working and practicing my French.
This was exactly the experience I hoped for – one where I was able to talk with French people casually. Beatrice helped me get connected, chat, and interact even when I was nervous. My only regret is not spending more time with her! I learned more French in my five days with Beatrice than I did in the 6 weeks I spent in France on my own. Thank you Beatrice!”
I am still smiling at my memories of my amazing French Immersion Homestay Week in Toulon in June with delightful Beatrice and family. Beatrice is a wonderful, talented teacher who was intent on providing me the exact learning/exploring program that I desired while staying at her lovely home near Toulon. I had taken some personally tailored, helpful French classes with her online beforehand, but once in Toulon, I chose to have “real conversations” while “doing” rather than sitting in her kitchen with French grammar and conversation books. On our outings, Beatrice patiently answered any questions and helped me when I stumbled or was “searching” for the correct words. While overseeing my conversations, we went to the bakery, grocery and “bar” where I bought a book of bus tickets. We conversed on the road on spectacular excursions to the Ile de Porquerolles and then to quaint Collobrieres, the Chartreuse de la Vernes monastery, and Bormes-les-Mimosa. All with my own personal tour guide/driver/teacher/fun companion. Shorter outings included swimming in the Mediterranean at a nearby rocky calanque and visiting the lively market at Sanary-sur-Mer. I also had free time to explore Toulon and environs on my own. In summary, if you want to experience French culture while living like a local, exploring the beautiful Toulon/Hyeres area, and at the same time improving your French, just hope that Beatrice has an opening.
I have been taking one on one classes with Beatrice, and she has helped me immensely in my comprehension, understanding, grammar and all things French language. She is incredibly patient and our classes are always interesting and funny. I started as a relative novice and have been steadily improving under her guidance. Recently I had the opportunity to visit her for a few days and I can say it is the perfect setting for.a full French immersion opportunity and experiencing all that French culture has to offer. From cuisine, beaches, restaurants, petit dejeuner by the shore, the market, bicycle rides, it is the perfect opportunity to experience France in a relaxed setting. I would love to go back soon! Thank you Beatrice!
