We arrived there one September afternoon. After dropping our luggage at the hotel, we headed for the cable car to go up to the Aiguille du Midi, a well-known summit in the area. Since the weather was very, very nice, we decided to not waste any time. The sky was completely clear and one never knows what tomorrow’s weather will be!

Brrrr !!

Fortunately, the line for the cable car was rather short and, after a few minutes, we climbed into the gondola. The trip to the summit of the Aiguille is really breathtaking! One must make a connection at a mid-point stop which is called the Plan de l’Aiguille. There is a small cafĂ© there and one can have a hot or cold drink while watching the parasailing enthusiasts launch themselves into thin air between the mountains. Brrrr!!

And then one climbs more than 2800 m in another cable car to reach the summit at 3842 m. After arriving at the station located at the top, one enters a network of tunnels which penetrate the mountain. There is a boutique, un small museum, un café, and an exit to get to the outside if one has the equipment to ski or to climb. There are several observation points (inside and outside) where one can enjoy a panoramic view.

A new tourist attraction opened in 2014 which is called Stepping into the Void. It’s a glass cage that is suspended from one of the observation platforms. This attraction is very popular and there was that day, like every day, a long waiting line. However, I didn’t mind: because I have a fear of heights, it was absolutely out of the question for me to do something like that! So I let my wife enjoy this unique experience alone: if you have the courage, you can stand in the void, with approximately 12 mm of glass between your feet and the rocks more than 1000 meters below!
