Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne – French Story & Translation

Huw, who went to stay at Marion’s for a French immersion in France at a teacher’s home has written this story as homework. Merci Huw!

Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne in Beaujolais, France

Aujourd’hui, nous avons décidé de visiter le marché à Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne. C’est une très belle ville ancienne avec beaucoup de maisons à colombages (avec du bois et des briques ou de la terre).

Today, we decided to visit the market in Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne. It’s a very beautiful old town with lots of timbered houses (with wood and bricks or soil)

Il faut trente minutes en voiture pour arriver à Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne mais ce n’est pas grave, je ne suis pas pressé, je suis en vacances. En plus nous roulons à travers la campagne et j’aime bien ça.

It takes thirty minutes by car to arrive in Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne but it doesn’t matter, I’m not in hurry, I’m in holidays. Besides we’re driving across the countryside and I like that.

Market Day in Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne, Beaujolais, France

Le marché se trouve sur la place du village et sous les Halles. Ces halles sont incroyables. D’abord elles ont été construites en 1440, puis elles ont été brulées partiellement par un incendie en 1670. Grâce à une comtesse très riche, elles ont été reconstruites à l’identique (comme elles étaient avant l’incendie). Elles ressemblent à un hall de cathédrale et en plus du marché, il y a parfois des concerts organisés sous ces halles. J’ai lu ces informations sur un des panneaux d’explication.

The market is taking place on the village’s main square and under the “Halles” (covered market place). This place is unbelievable. First it’s been built in 1440, then it’s been partially burnt by a fire in 1670. Thanks to a really rich countess, it’s been rebuilt identically (as it was before the fire). It looks like the entrance of a cathedral and in addition to the market, there are sometimes concerts organized there. I read these informations on one of the information sign.

Les produits sur le marché ont l’air très frais et sont généralement vendus directement par les producteurs. Marion a acheté du fromage de chèvre et du comté (un fromage de la région du Jura). Elle a acheté ensuite de la bavette (c’est le nom d’un morceau de bœuf), et de l’agneau (je ne me rappelle plus le nom du morceau).

The products on the market look very fresh and are generally sold directly by the producers. Marion bought goat cheese and ‘Comté”( a cheese from the Jura region). Then she bought “bavette”(it’s the name of a piece of beef) and lamb (I don’t remember the name of the piece.)

Puis nous avons marché dans la ville. Il y a des ponts fleuris sur la rivière qui s’appelle la Chalaronne. Après la marche nous avons eu envie d’un rafraîchissement donc nous avons discuté autour d’une bière, sur une terrasse au soleil.

Then we walked in the town. There are flowered bridges on the river which is called “Chalaronne”. After the walk, we wanted a refreshment so we had a beer and chatted on a terrace in the sun.

Live Hen For Marion’s House

Après ça Marion a acheté une poule (vivante) pour avoir plus d’œufs frais à Lancié. Après discussion nous sommes d’accord pour l’appeler Bethan (comme ma fille). En rentrant à la maison (chez Marion je veux dire) nous avons présenté Bethan aux trois autres poules du poulailler. Elle n’a pas été acceptée par les autres tout de suite, c’est la vie animale !! Mais après quelques jours j’espère qu’elle sera intégrée au groupe.

After that, Marion bought a hen (alive) in order to have more fresh eggs in Lancié. After discussion, we agreed to call her Bethan (after my daughter). Coming home (at Marion’s place I mean) we introduced Bethan to the three other hen of the chicken coop. She was not accepted by the others immediately. That’s animal life ! But after a few days, I hope she will be integrated in the group.

C’était une très belle journée, nous avons beaucoup ri ! Maintenant nous allons déguster le fromage et la viande que Marion a acheté…j’ai hâte parce que je suis sûr que ça va être délicieux.

That was a beautiful day with lots of laughter. Now we’re going to taste the cheese and the meet that Marion bought…I’m looking forward to it because I know It’s going to be delicious.
