Don is taking us for a tour of Saint Jean de Luz in the Pays Basque region of France.

The third day of my French immersion residential stay with Evelyne, she took me to the town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and despite the bad weather, we had a good visit.

1 – View Over Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Harbor

First, we went to an unobstructed viewpoint of the city and its port, but the moment we arrived, it began to sprinkle, and the wind began to blow. The port seemed dramatic because of the weather–in fact, a recent storm had deposited a 5-ton boulder on the dyke marking the port’s entrance, and the waves were huge next to the dykes. We didn’t stay there long.

After the viewpoint, we took the car down to the town center to avoid the rain that varied between heavy and light.

2 – Visiting Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Saint-Jean-de-Luz is known for being the place where Louis XIV married the Spanish Infanta, the princess Marie-ThĂ©rĂšse of Austria, in 1660. We began our downtown walk by looking at the old fishing port and the houses where Louis and Marie-ThĂ©rĂšse lived in the days just before their wedding.

Next, we went into a pastry shop called “Maison Adam,” which is known for its macaroons which have been made there since Louis and Marie-ThĂ©rĂšse’s wedding. These macaroons aren’t like macaroons you can buy elsewhere. They’re more like a cookie made with almond flour, and they’re really good. I bought a half-dozen to try later on.

3 – Saint-Jean-le-Baptiste Church in Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Then, we went in the church of Saint John the Baptist, where the royal wedding took place. The interior of the church is dark, but decorated with art in gold and wood. There’s a pretty, 3-story wooden gallery encircling the congregation, to better accommodate crowds.

We came and went by the church’s current main entrance, but evidently, during the time of Louis XIV, there was a different main entrance–the door used by the royal couple for only the marriage ceremony–that, according to legend, was walled up after the ceremony so plain folks could never use it again.

4 – The Shops of Saint-Jean-de-Luz

After the church, we visited a Basque linen shop, where I bought Basque-style placemats and napkins with pretty blue stripes for my dining table back home.

With all my purchases in hand, we went to look at the town’s beach at low tide, but not for long, because it began to rain with a strong, cold wind, and my shopping bags got wet. So, we went in search of a bar, where we comforted ourselves with hot chocolates before returning to Anglet.

I had a good time seeing Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and I imagine that it must be even more enjoyable in the sunshine.

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
