By the way, watch the faux amis : “une prune” is “a plum” and “un pruneau” is “a prune”.

2 – Visiting a Plum Farm in France

My American immersion student Deborah and I went to meet Jean-Pierre, a plum grower close to our house. He took us on a tour of his plum orchard.

We walked in the orchard and tasted the fresh plums. Then, we watched the sorting and drying process and Deborah took pictures.

3 – Different Steps of Plum Farming in France

  1. Récolte des prunes avec des tracteurs.
  1. Harvest from the trees with the tractors.
  2. Washing and sorting of the prunes. Workers sort the prunes into two sizes after they are put into the machine. Once sorted they are put on special drying racks to be sent to the ovens
  3. The ovens are very hot ( 80°Celsius), the prunes dry for 24 hours.
  4. After the prunes come out of the ovens, they are sorted once again. This inspection is for the texture and evenness of cooking. Also, any stems are removed. If the prunes are not picture perfect they will be sorted for confiture or to make sauces. If the prunes are not completing cooked (because they are too large), they will go back in the oven.
  5. Once these steps have been completed the prunes are ready to be sold.

4 – Plum Drying Sheds of the Lot-et-Garonne

Before, the plums where dried in old buildings, that you still find everywhere in my region.

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
