During my French immersion stay in France, we went with my teacher Pierre to the night market of Eymet.

Markets are a vital element of life in France. Every town and most villages have one. But did you know about the French night markets?

Night markets are held in the evenings in summer months only, and focus on eating outside in convivial surroundings.

You choose your food from the market stalls that surround the central town square, which is set up with tables. There is often also music, dances, etc.

The produce sold comes from local farmers and producers, and is typical of the region.

3 – What Kind of Produce do You Find on a French Night Market?

In Eymet and the surrounding towns of  Lot et Garonne, there are « foie gras », local wines, duck breasts and patés, fruits like peaches, strawberries, vegetables like tomatoes (and the famous tomate de Marmande).

Lot et Garonne is famous for its vegetable and fruits (or dry fruit like the « pruneau d’Agen », a delicious prune, you are unlikely to find prunes as tasty as these anywhere else!

When we arrived in Eymet, early evening, a lot of people were already there. I heard conversations in French and English. The aromas of the food was divine !

We walked around a very beautiful fountain and looked at the local products.  Along the way some friends greeted us by saying « hello » and introduced themselves to me in a very friendly manner.

And then, we ate (some curried chicken) under an ancient arcade where other friends joined us. It was a great experience !

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
