Yesterday, we went to spend the day at the Plougrescant “Abyss”. An abyss is a big and very dangerous hole.

This place is named this way because there are large boulders/rocks by the sea, and when it’s windy and there are big waves, the sea hits the rocks hard, and it’s dangerous.

Here, in Tenerife, the ocean is particularly powerful. I can spend hours watching the enormous waves crashing.

Each wave has its own life: it is born, reaches its peak, then dies in a burst of foam.

Each has its personality: the shy one that fades too quickly, the rebel that advances obliquely from the others, the majestic one that swells high to keep the observer in suspense, the fierce one that showers you with foam when you thought you were out of its reach.

Chaque rouleau est un événement.

Each breaker is an event.

Suddenly, a gigantic wave emerges on the horizon, unfolding all its power as it approaches the coast. The white crests sparkle and remind me of wild horses with their mane of foam.

Each wave carries within it a changing palette, ranging from deep cobalt blue to emerauld green to sparkling turquoise.

It’s a symphony of blues, a visual immersion where the sea, in constant metamorphosis, reveals the depth of its chromatic palette.

We often go to the Abyss because it’s not far from our house, and it’s beautiful under any weather and in all the seasons. We always take friends who come to visit us over there, even in winter.

A famous Breton place

The Abyss is a place fairly well-known throughout France because it was chosen to represent Brittany for a large national ad campaign. There is a really original detail: a small house which was built between two large rocks.

The picture of this house was displayed everywhere on large posters in the Parisian subway and on other large add displays in France, with a message that said: “come visit Brittany”.

If you come at my house for an immersion in Paimpol, in the Côtes-d’Armor region, you must go see the Abyss of Plougrescant. It’s also an interesting place geologically speaking since you can see grey granite and also pink granite, which you’ll be able to observe more fully near Perros-Guirec.

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
