For our first visit, I am taking you to the castle of Chantilly. Half way between our house and Paris (about a 20 minutes drive), the castle is part of a vast domain of 7800 hectares in the middle of a large forest.

1 – Chantilly Castle

Chantilly’s castle is a great place where you can have a good time with your family. It was built by the princes over the centuries; men can find an outstanding collection of rare books, paintings and art objects. The children can discover the castle in the form of riddles thanks to a tape guide available in several languages.

2 – Chantilly’s Castle Library

My favorite room: the library
The duke Of Aumal writes in a letter to a friend: “I believe that I am affected by bibliomania!”
Indeed, there are approximately 19 000 books exposed in the library which the oldest is from the sixth century! It is a fabulous room! But there are in fact 60 000 books in the castle.

3 – Chantilly’s Castle Parks and Gardens

There is something for every taste: a French style garden created by Le Nôtre, the famous gardener of Louis the 14th, an English garden created in the 19th century and an English-Chinese garden created in the 18th century, made of 5 small houses of rustic aspect. In one of them, you’ll find the restaurant called “Le Hameau “, famous for its homemade whipped cream.

It is said that whipped cream was invented by the big cook François Vatel (the cook of the prince of Condé) but it is not true, because it was created in Italy in the 16th century.

About François Vatel: during a visit of Louis the 14th in the castle of Chantilly, François Vatel chose to commit suicide because the fish which was planned for the meal was not delivered in time! You can watch this sad story by looking at the movie “Vatel” with Gérard Depardieu.

Children will particularly love the gardens because you can visit them with a small train or a caddy from April till October, it’s fun for children. There are even kangaroos!

4 – Chantilly’s Garden Big Stables

The big stables
They were built from 1719 till 1740 at the request of the Prince of Condé (Duke d’Aumal’s uncle) who thought he would be reincarnated as a horse after his death! That is why he asked the architect for gorgeous stables! Inside is located the horse museum with a lots of equestrian shows. These stables are often considered the most beautiful stables of the world.
