On March 1st, my student Jessica and I went to the Battle of Flowers, which happens during the Carnival of Nice. The festival takes place on the famous Promenade of the English and luckily we had splendid weather. It smelled like spring also, thanks to the freshly cut flowers of the floral arrangements.

The Floats of Nice Carnival

The floats measure about 7 – 8 meters long, between 6 – 7 meters high and 2 meters wide. They are quite imposing and beautifully decorated, each with a different stage design. The compositions are of course in keeping with the theme of the year. For 2015, it is Music.

All sorts of entertainers march alongside these floats: flag throwers, dancers, musicians, a parade of horses with their riders.

The Battles of Flowers Parades in Nice

Originally, this festival was organized to welcome the first tourists. Today, the tradition continues. On each decorated float, costumed models throw more than 100,000 flowers to the public, which is where the name Battle of Flowers originates, and believe me, it is a real battle!

The pubic tries to catch the maximum number of flowers, which can sometimes provoke some teeth gnashing in the stands. What do you want, there are some people faster than others!

As the flowers are thrown, obviously the floats are emptying, but on the spectator’s side big bouquets are forming.

In our case, we returned a bit empty-handed…. Just a few small sprigs of mimosa…

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
