My House – French Story & Translation & Audio Pronunciation 🏠

Learn the French house vocabulary in context with John’s bilingual story written in easy French and translated into English, with French audio recordings.

My French student by Skype John was learning the French house vocabulary from my intermediate French audiobook Ă  Moi Paris L4.

For homework, I asked him to describe his house in French to me.

John took the assignment at heart and he did such a great job that we decided to share it with you – I even recorded it for you.

Thank you John!

1 – Describing My House in French

This free French story comes with audio. Please press play on the audio player to hear my recording of the story. Please note that whenever possible, I used a modern French pronunciation.

After entering our big rusty iron gate, you go toward the house on a small path until you arrive at the front door.

The path passes over a stream and next to a waterfall and a pond with some goldfish.

2 – Entering My House

The front door is glass and through the door you can see a large Buddha in the entry.

All of the colors of our house are very interesting because my wife hired an interior designer.

For example, the walls in the living room are beige like cardboard and the ceiling is pale pink. The walls in the office are dark red.

On the floor there is dark brown parquet and Turkish rugs.

If you walk straight past the Buddha you cross the dining room and reach the kitchen.

In the kitchen, there is a large refrigerator, a freezer, a double sink, a gas stove, and an oven. The cupboards are filled with Japanese food (seaweed and rice) for my wife and her children and some chips for me.

If you make your way towards the Buddha to the right you will find the living room. In this room, there is a couch and several cloth armchairs. There is a gas fireplace. There are also some large windows and you can see the city and the mountains covered with snow. The ceiling is very high. There are no curtains. On the floor, there is wall to wall carpeting.

In the living room, my wife has placed many knick-knacks on her shelves and she has hung paintings on the walls. Next to the shelves, there is a cloth armchair.

Also in the living room, there is a gas fireplace that the dogs are fond of when it is cold. On top, there is another Buddha. To the right of the fireplace, there is the door to my office. It is a mess. My papers and my books are everywhere. But the colors are interesting because the walls are blood red.

If you make your way towards the Buddha to the left and then walk straight ahead across the bedroom you arrive at the bathroom. In the bedroom, there is a large bed upon which there is a mattress, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, a wool blanket, and a colorful bedspread. There are also some very fluffy pillows. On each side of the bed, there are night stands with bedside lights and two electronic alarm clocks. On the bed, there is often a cat.

My wife has a closet and a drawer case with 18 drawers where she should put her linen. But it’s often on the ground.

In the bathroom, there is a deep Japanese bathtub for my wife and a shower for me. On the floor, there is cold tile. There are also two sinks, a small cupboard for my clothes and the toilet.

In front of the house, there are two garages. The one on the left is my wife’s garage. It is full of my wife’s crap. The one on the right is mine. It is also full of my wife’s crap.

My garage also serves as the workshop when I take out the cars. I keep my do it yourself tools inside.

Between the garage and the kitchen there is a laundry room. Inside there is a coat rack for hanging raincoats, coats, jackets, scarves, and caps. There is also a washing machine. By chance there is a skunk cap.

John H.

Un peu sur moi: I am an anesthesiologist in Boise, Idaho. I fell in love with France forty years ago when I spent my senior year of high school in St. Cloud (une des banlieues de Paris). The French that I learned 40 years ago has long since evaporated. I've been taking French phone and Skype lessons from Camille for a while, and now "graduated" to take advanced conversation lessons with Olivier. Their lessons have been a very big help.
