Quiz in a Pub – French Story & Translation

Immersion teacher Suzanne organizes bilingual quizzes in Breton bar.
She’ll share this fun evening with you in the form of a bilingual story.

For the last few years, I have organized bilingual quizzes in Jugon. The quizzes usually take place in a bar. We do them on a Monday night, every other month. The bartender chose Monday because it’s a quiet evening in the bar, and we can take up most of the space.

Two weeks before the quiz, people begin to register in teams of four people: two French and two English-speaking. There are usually about ten teams. On the afternoon of the quiz, Sam the bartender prepares tables and chairs for the teams, plus a microphone and sound system for me.

In the evening, when I arrive, I put a number on each table and a small booklet for writing the answers to the questions, and I put up a poster that shows the different subjects of the questions. Or rather, when I arrive, someone offers to do all this work for me while I greet all the participants. It is very good to work in a supportive team!

I read the questions in French and then in English. Team members talk to each other and they write their answers. There are questions about Brittany, France, history, science, news and sports, among other things. I have to prepare questions that will appeal to everyone – and apart from that, interesting details or things that are funny to find out. So, questions like ‘What is the color of the black box of an airplane?’ Or ‘What English port did The Titanic leave to go to New York?’ Or ‘To which trumpetist do we owe the song ” What a Wonderful World “? ‘ or ‘ What first nylon product was marketed in 1938? ‘

3 – Answers of the Bilingual French English Quiz

Donc ‘Quel sous-vêtement français porte un nom anglais signifiant « ficelle » ?’ ou ‘How do you say « tonsils » in French ?’

There are moments of intense concentration! Usually the answers are accepted in both languages, but occasionally there is a question in French with an answer in English only, or vice versa. So, ‘What French underwear carries an English name meaning “string”? (A thong) Or ‘How do you say “tonsils” in French?’ Imagine the little drawings and gestures that quizzers do to find the answer!

At the end of each round, we exchange answer papers to check and work out the score, then all teams give me their number of points (out of ten) for the round. During the break (yes, it makes you thirsty, reading all these questions!) I give out a large sheet with expressions in French and English, where quizzers have to make pairs, and I can relax for twenty minutes.

And then we continue with friendliness and good humor. At the end of the evening, there are small prizes for the winning team, but nothing too big, I do not want it to be serious and competitive. The first objective is to have a good time together!

An update , October 2020. With the covid health crisis, it’s been months since we could do a quiz at the bar. However, I meet people in Jugon who ask me, ‘When is the next quiz?’ In September I go* to the bar to talk with Pascal, the barman: yes we can set up seven teams maximum instead of 14 (*note the use of the historic present.)

Puis la deuxième vague de covid arrive…

Then the second wave of covid arrives…

How about doing a zoom quiz? It’s not the same thing: people like to meet up at the bar, and chat with each other. But, for a new era, a new approach. We must be patient, we’ll do quizzes again in the bar later. A zoom quiz really IS social distancing! No need for barrier gestures there! Plus, we can contact people in other countries, friends almost all over the world, except Australia where it will be the middle of the night.

My husband Peter uses his Facebook page to contact people. I send a PDF poster not only to the usual quiz participants, but also to my past French Today students. Very quickly we have more than 20 teams who want to participate.

We refine the plans. I’ll do the quiz with Jim from Hospice Africa, who has a professional zoom account. I’ll prepare the questions, I’ll organise the list of participants, we’ll try to limit the number of teams to 25… but very quickly we have 26, 27, 28, 29 … Oh, what ?!

It’s the first time we’ve done such a thing and I’m getting a little apprehensive. We have participants in Europe, of course, but also in the United States in Africa (in Malawi), in Mauritius. Have we bitten off more than we can chew? We run several zoom trials with small groups to learn the system. Several times we talk to our Guinea pigs and explain how to change their name, how to pay on PayPal, how we plan to share the screen… This is the first time on zoom for others, too. We feel like we have prepared well, but will it work on the day?

8 – Success !

It’s with a lot of trepidation that we open the quiz 20 minutes before the start and hey! somebody is already there in the zoom waiting room… then two people, then there’s a queue of players. Wow, it works! Hurray for IT and new technology!

We do five rounds in the quiz : 4 rounds of general knowledge questions, and the penultimate round, a ‘Pair Them Up’ round with a shared Word document on the screen. The evening didn’t go without its technical issues – it was quite a learning curve for Jim and me. Peter who was taking part at home phoned me twice with advice. ‘We can’t hear the music, Suzanne! You have to click in the box at the bottom left to share the sound from the computer.’

We learned a lot, we had a lot of fun, and so did the participants. I meant to take a screenshot of everyone on Zoom to illustrate this update… but botheration!  I completely forgot. We got lots of lovely emails afterwards, and lots of posts on Peter’s Facebook page. We’re going to continue the zoom quizzes, that’s clear, while waiting for better days post covid, when we can go back to the bar. Contact us if you want to participate!

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
