Practice your French with this easy French English bilingual story about a French charity store. Vintage shops are quite popular in France, however “Le Charity Shop” of Jugon-les-Lacs is quite unique!

The village of Jugon, our local village two kilometers from where we live, is quite small, with just under thirty shops, restaurants and services in two streets, and two central squares.

One of the squares, the Place du Martray is picturesque with old-style granite-style buildings, the majority dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

One of the shops on this Place du Martray, The Charity Shop is located in the village’s old grocery store. It is a store that fascinates and surprises many of my immersion learners, so I decided to write an article about it.

2 – Gifts of Vintage Items to the Charity Store

I interviewed several people for this purpose. First, I spoke with Angela, the secretary of the Hospice Africa association that manages the store. When I asked her to describe it to me, she replied, “All things at the Charity Shop are gifts, so secondhand items.”

“In principle, there are four categories of donations. We have books and DVDs in French and English. Then there is the clothing and fabrics (curtains, table cloths etc.). Then there is crockery, knick-knacks, paintings, gadgets and small electric appliances.”

“Finally, we are receiving more and more furniture, now that we have enough room to exhibit it and put it on sale. You can find some nice surprises at the Charity Shop, it’s a real Ali Baba’s cavern! “

Yes, because the store is now in its third version, each time larger than the previous store. The Charity Shop has moved three times since it opened in 2009, still staying in the Place du Martray

In addition, Angela told me that the store has become a real meeting place for French and English speakers, and that you can find all kinds of useful information: where to find recommendations for a good garage or French teacher, what are the best beaches in the area, who sells good firewood, and so on.

4 – Not Your Typical Vintage Shop in France

A charity shop in the middle of the village is not typical in France. Associations such as Emmaus or Secours Catholique have shops or warehouses, but not generally in the city center.

In fact, this store is not of French origin. It is a local British resident, Jim Bennett, who founded this French branch of the Hospice Africa organization. Twenty volunteers work in turn to open the shop seven days a week throughout the year.

5 – The Parent Organization of the French Charity Shop is in Africa

The parent organization of Hospice Africa is based in Kampala, Uganda, with the goal of facilitating access to palliative care for seriously ill Ugandans and helping them and their families to prepare and discuss their end-of-life serenely. Later HA expanded its work in other Anglophone countries in Africa.

When Jim came to live in Brittany after his retirement, the founder of the HA organization in Kampala told him “So now you can open a store in France and we can start developing our treatment system in French-speaking Africa. “

6 – What Does This Charity Do?

The Hospice Africa treatment protocol is to prescribe oral liquid morphine for pain relief. It is an efficient and cheap model, but not well known. There are many countries in sub-Saharan Africa that do not have a palliative care treatment system. It is therefore necessary to do training courses for doctors and nurses to explain this system.

With the money raised in The Charity Shop in Jugon les Lacs in part, it is possible to finance internships every year in Kampala for medical professionals from French-speaking African countries.

As Angela says, a little money can do a lot in Africa. As an example, she tells me that two euros buy enough morphine to treat a patient for 15 days.

My French immersion students, visitors to the Charity Shop who have bought scarves, jewelery, books, small plates or other souvenir gifts, or even a backpack (to return to the US with more luggage than on arrival!) join the other customers of the Charity Shop who help by their purchases to make life more serene for people who are suffering.

Can You Understand Today’s Spoken French?

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
