A peine arrivées qu’elles me criaient : « Café !!!!! »

Last week my mother and my grandmother decided to pay me a visit to Roye. As soon as they arrived, they cried out: “coffee !!!”

We’ve always had a small tradition: getting coffee together and chatting for hours! We talk about nothing and everything. We tell each other about our latest outings, the restaurants we have eaten at, the visits and new places to see, our last purchases during our shopping outings. And all this around a good coffee!True happiness!

3 – Discovering the Bell Chimes

  • « Ecoute ! C’est joli ! Qu’est-ce que c’est ? »
  • « Ça ce sont les carillons ! »
  • « C’est très beau ! »

So we settled in my covered terrace and were in the middle of a conversation when suddenly, my grandmother stops mid-sentence and says:

  • “Listen! How pretty! What is it ?”
  • “These are the chimes!”
  • “It’s really beautiful !”

It should be known that in cities in the north of France, we still hear chimes. The chimes ring at the top of the belfries that dominate the northern cities. In Roye, we often hear chimes. It’s very nice! Have you ever heard the sound of chimes?

The ringer is the person who plays the chimes. This job has been around for 500 years already! But today it is increasingly rare. Imagine climbing, one by one, the steps that lead to the top of the tower (yes, there is no elevator in the belfries) and work constantly to the sound of the bells! In any case, it’s very enjoyable for us!

4 – The Chimes and the Movie Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’tis

In Roye, the ringer changes tune several times a week. There are melodies of current songs but sometimes there are also older melodies. And if you’ve seen the movie “Bienvenue chez les ch’tis” then you know what I’m talking about!

Every weekend when the weather is nice, Benjamin, my students and I sit in the garden with a coffee or a glass of wine (depending on the time :-))) and we enjoy the sounds together. It is very soothing!

If you come for an French immersion homestay with us, I, therefore, invite you to come and enjoy the music of the bells with us!

It’s not just slang. The French everybody speaks in France today is NOT the overly enunciated, extremely formal French usually taught to foreigners.
