The Saga of John and his wild animal continues... This intermediate level story comes with audio.

This time, we were studying vocabulary related to crimes and investigations. For his homework, John invented this fun story which I've decided to share with you.

"Monsieur et Madame" jokes constitute a very famous category in French jokelore. While bearing similarities to "Knock knock" jokes in their use of puns as the basic feature, "Monsieur et Madame" jokes have their specific format: they all start with a question about what an imaginary couple might call their child(ren), based on their last name: "Monsieur et Madame X ont un fils/une fille, comment s'appelle-t-il/elle?"  (Mr. and Mrs. X have a son/daughter, what's his/her name?). What is supposed to cause laughter here is the combination of the given answer, i.e. the child's first name, with the last name already mentioned in the question.

Today, I am going to tell "Toto" jokes. These are very popular jokes among elementary school children, and there are thousands of them. They also have been part of the French culture for a while. "Toto" is a young school boy, an impertinent dunce, who talks back and is lazy but usually not mean - I believe his name would be "Little Johnny" in English. Most jokes evolve around school, homeowk, talking back to adults and are very short and use colloquial language.

French writer of the 20th century, Louis Aragon was involved in Dadaism from 1919 to 1924. He then became a founding member of Surrealism in 1924, with André Breton and Philippe Soupault. In the 1920s, Aragon became a fellow traveler of the French Communist Party along with several other surrealists, and took out his card in January 1927.

Le Quatorzième et dernier Jour – Voyage de St. Niklaus à Zermatt

Notre plan était facile : nous pensions aller en train à St. Niklaus, puis monter à l’Europahütte et y passer la nuit, et enfin descendre jusqu’à Zermatt.

Les Chèvres

Pendant notre randonnée entre l’Augstbordpass et St. Niklaus nous avons rencontré des chèvres qui étaient très bizarres.  Elles avaient des cornes robustes et des barbiches noires et de longs pelages.
