Many of my French immersion homestay students are intrigued by the fact that my husband Peter and I are English people living in France

  1. Depuis combien de temps vivez-vous en Bretagne ?
  2. Pourquoi avez-vous décidé de vivre en France ?
  3. Et pourquoi en Bretagne ?
  1. How long have you lived in Brittany?
  2. Why did you decide to live in France ?
  3. And why in Brittany?

When Peter and I chose to come to live in France, part of our project was to open bed and breakfast accommodation. The idea was that I would continue my work as a language teacher, and that Peter would manage the tourist side. His work would bring in a bit more money (literally ‘round off our end of the month’, and ‘put butter in the spinach’).

Brittany is a very touristic region, and not very far from England, and this guided our choice. There are many Britons settled in Brittany, and I was confident that I would find enough people who wanted to take French lessons. I am also a teacher of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) so I had a second string to my bow.

But first it was necessary to renovate the house. It had been uninhabited for more than thirty years.

“Wow, Suzanne! So it was a big project! Do you have pictures of the house when you got here? “
” Yes of course ! I can show you photos just now in the dining room. We’ve compiled a little photomontage ‘Before and after’. “

3 – Our French Home Renovation Adventure

« Quel courage, venir rĂ©nover une ruine ! Â»

“What courage, to come to renovate a ruin! “

“Ah, but it wasn’t a ruin, in fact, not at all. The owner before us was the son of our neighbor Louis, and Louis used to keep an eye on the house for his son who lived near Paris. He opened the doors and windows to ventilate the house. He planted potatoes and mowed the grass, which kept the land clean. The house was in good condition, with a fairly new roof. It was already connected to the water network, but there was no electricity.

« Comme j’ai dit, quel courage ! Â»

“As I said, what courage! “

“No, it was our ‘adventure’. We sold our house in England, but our budget was not big enough for us to buy a nice ready renovated house. But don’t forget that before that, we worked for ten years in Africa. And there, that was a real education, good preparation! Life there taught us that anything is possible – or almost – with a little imagination, creativity and determination … So, we had the good luck to find this house – or rather, this farm – to renovate. “

« Une ferme ?   C’était une ferme ici ? Â»

A farm ? It was a farm here? “

“Yes, before, it was a small farm in a longhouse. A longhouse is a long traditional low building built in stone, with the family at one end and the animals in the rest of the building. First the horses closest to the family, then the cows in what is now our living room, then the pigs as far away as possible, because of the smell. Pigs are smart, but they smell bad! “

“Where did the pigs live, if the cows were in the living room at the other end of the house? “

“Ah, we demolished the pigsties, where we’ve made the carpark. “

“And how long did it take you to renovate the house? “

“We spent a year and a half doing it. It was necessary to work as fast as possible, so that we were able to start making money again. “

“And you did all the work yourself? “

“Oh no, we knew almost nothing about construction. There was a wall to pull down, openings to make for new doors and windows, skylights to put in, all the electricity and plumbing to install, the sanitation to get up to standard … Oh no, we were not capable of doing this sort of thing ourselves.

We looked for a roofer for the velux windows, builders and carpenters for the structural work, and then a local heating, plumbing and electrical company for the rest of the ‘professional’ work. We did as much as possible of the rest of the work ourselves: the insulation, the plasterboarding, the decoration and the pointing. “

6 – Doing Home Repairs in France

« Les joints ? Â»

” The pointing ? “

“Filling the spaces between the stones in the walls. I love exposed stone, not just outside, but I wanted to keep some exposed stone inside too. It represented a lot of square meters. I calculated about 320mÂČ in total. And I made the mistake of criticizing Peter’s results the first day we worked on the pointing. A big mistake, actually!

Peter told me that I was too much of a perfectionist, and if I wanted to do it on my own, he would be happy to do something else. And that’s what happened! A long-term job, but in fact a job that I did not find unpleasant, at the rate of two square meters each morning, in the company of my tools, the local or national radio on my mp3 player … “

7 – Fixing A House in France

We received many visits from neighbors and also from friends in England who came to admire our progress. Louis came regularly, his wife Lea less often. Louis knew our house like the back of his hand (literally ‘on the tip of his fingers’). He was born there and lived there before building his own house nearby. He gave us lots of fascinating information about the farmhouse’s past, and life on the farm when he was young.

Peter built me a sort of tent with an old bed sheet. That way I could continue working on the pointing even if it was raining a little, or if there was too much sun. And the day I finished the pointing on the front of the house, it was time to celebrate! We opened a bottle of champagne … or rather, a cheap sparkling wine – we were very careful with money at that time, since we had no income …

« Mais je parle trop.   Ça fait revenir les souvenirs. Â»

“But I’m talking too much. It brings back memories. “

“I have a question, Suzanne: Where did you sleep during the renovation? The house was a building site, wasn’t it? “

.

“Yes, but we wanted to live on the spot so we could progress faster. So we bought an old 70s caravan that we put in the garden with its awning, and then in the open barn when winter arrived. And we always ate well. Peter cooked very good meals every night…
